The present building dates from the late 15th century, but there has been a church on this site since the sixth or early seventh century, making it one of the oldest Christian sites in Anglesey. One hundred and forty of the victims of 1859's Royal Charter shipwreck are buried in the churchyard. Charles Dickens, who wrote about the loss of the ship, praised the rector of the church in his ministrations for victims, survivors and their families.
