Built by King John in the 13th century to protect the strategic East-West route along the River Shannon. The site of the siege of Athlone in 1691. Miles of views south along the Shannon on sunny days.

Our local castle that’s really worth visiting and that explains the history of Athlone through the ages. Being on the Shannon added hugely to its importance as a location for protection.

Dating from the 12th century this castle is a popular tourist destination with an interesting self-guided tour and exhibits. The tourist office is located within the grounds. There are great river views from the top!
