Our local castle that’s really worth visiting and that explains the history of Athlone through the ages. Being on the Shannon added hugely to its importance as a location for protection.
Dating from the 12th century this castle is a popular tourist destination with an interesting self-guided tour and exhibits. The tourist office is located within the grounds. There are great river views from the top!
