The impact of Viking habitation, the strategic role played by RAF Castletown in the defence of Scapa Flow and the north British coastal waters during World War II, to the present day. Castletown Heritage Society seeks to bring this story to life, and in doing so preserve the unique character, history and traditions of the village of Castletown and the Parish Olrig.

The ruins and history of the flagstone industry really interesting and set in a gorgeous location with views of Dunnet Head, fishing boats etc. On a sunny day (as we had) it was a couple of wonderful hours learning about the industry that was so popular and understanding why field fences around here are made of flagstones! A great visit.

Excellent history of Caithness slate industry in Castletown (6 miles from Thurso) and a short walk around the area.
