Take a stroll down from the villa and visit this historic site. You can snorkel it, or walk the land. Modern-day Plytra is Ancient Asopos, which once was a thriving and prosperous port town until it sank into Xili after an earthquake in 365AD. It was a League of Free Laconian's member from the 1st century BC, had its own currency, and, recently, a temple dedicated to Hercules has been identified. Under Roman rule, Asopos was a major center on the imperial Roman road. The ruins contain tombs, at least two bathhouses, reservoirs, and mosaic floors made from locally excavated marble. The view of the Aegean Sea with mountains in the distance is spectacular. It’s also likely you will find some shards of ancient pottery or even an ancient coin! The ancient coins depicted the gods Dionysus, Poseidon, and Nemesis. Dionysus was the ruling god of Laconia, as our region has the most fertile lands in Greece. In fact, it is known that there a temple dedicated to Dionysus here, but its exact location has yet to be found.
