Civita di Bagnoregio is also known as the dying town. Perched on a tuffaceous hill in the middle of a landslide-prone valley, this nice little town is slowly succumbing to the ravages of time. It was once a thriving town, built by the Etruscan to protect a road leading from Lake Bolsena to the north across the Tiber valley. Rebuilt in the Middle Ages, Bagnoregio became an important centre with churches, hospices and homes of illustrious families.

Civita di Bagnoregio Civita was founded by Etruscans more than 2,500 years ago. Civita was the birthplace of Saint Bonaventure, who died in 1274. The location of his boyhood house has long since fallen off the edge of the cliff. By the 16th century, Civita was beginning to decline, becoming eclipsed by its former suburb Bagnoregio.
This place is a bit surreal. It looks more like a movie set than a real town. The town of Bangnoregio is a basic non-touristy Italian town. But the connected (JUST) village of Civita is quite something! Its connected by a narrow, very long pedestrian bridge. Believe it or not, people actually live here (only a few, but still). there are few cafes, tourist shops and restaurants there too. It is actually in Lazio, not Umbria, but makes a great stop on the way back to Rome.
