A stunning walk or run up the the trig point, the highest peak in the Mendips. You'll pass through woodland, heathland and may see wild ponies and highland cattle.

A fantastic walk from King's Wood, an ancient woodland, along a long distance footpath, the West Mendip Way, traversing a limestone ridge up to Crook Peak. Spectacular views across Somerset. The Webbington Hotel and a couple of pubs in the village of Cross are nearby if you are in need of refreshment.

We're surrounded by atmospheric woodland - the perfect place for a short stroll, a long walk as far as Cheddar and back or even a proper hike (long distance footpath, The West Mendip Way, runs past our house). Challenging routes for bikers on dedicated mountain bike trail or easier trails by sticking to the firetracks. Hidden in the wood are ancient limekilns, neolithic caves and Iron Age hill forts.

Just 30 min drive from Wild Pinebeck and you're on the beach! There's a fantastic walk up to and along Brean Down (very steep!) and at the top, wonderful views over the Severn. You'll see the remnants of a fort built in 1870 and a Roman temple. Plus there's a National Trust café!

A railway track that's been converted to a path running from Yatton to Cheddar. Mostly flat and brilliant for families. Bike hire at Yatton, plus café. You can also stop off at the Railway Inn, owned by Thatchers, for a wee cider (or apple juice) in Sandford.

Nearest shop

Technically, the Texaco garage is our nearest shop, but we recommend this family-run mini supermarket in Langford. It has just about everything you'll need for a short stay, including dairy-free, vegan, gluten-free options, a range of beer, cider and wine, ready-meals by Cook and locally-produced food.

Our favourite local pub

The Swan Inn is only a five minute walk away and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. We love this pub - the food is good, if pricey, and they have a fantastic selection of local Butcombe beer, cider and wine, plus plenty of outdoor seating. Sanjida even held one of her book launches in the pub! We'd also recommend another Butcombe pub, The Langford Inn as we prefer the food there, although it's a longer walk (50 min approx) or a 5 min drive.

City/town information

We've lived in Bristol most of our adult lives. I love the quirkiness of the city, how cosmopolitan it is, and yet small enough to walk through the city centre. I'd highly recommend Gloucester Road, packed with eateries and eclectic independent shops; Lido Bristol for a spa day with its outdoor pool and hot tub, and for (in my opinion) the best food in the city, and a wander round the historic areas by the harbour and across the iconic suspension bridge. The Watershed cinema has a great bar and shows independent films; We the Curious is our science museum, and there's art too, at the City Museum and Art gallery, as well as a range of small independent galleries.

Bath spa is an amazing place. It was Jane Austen’s home, and is an extremely picturesque place full of Georgian terraces. There are many fantastic wine bars, cafés and restaurants as well as a lively shopping scene. You’ll also find a couple of fantastic independent bookshops. Places to visit are the American Museum of fashion, the spa, with a rooftop swimming pool and the Roman Baths.

Bike trail

The fire tracks through Rowberrow Warren can be cardiovascularly challenging but the reward is biking beneath beech and through pines to reach Black Down heath with stunning views over the Severn Estuary and on to Wales. There are dedicated mountain bike trails managed by Ride Mendips. I’m a blue trail biker and I find even their blue tracks too tricky but Jaimie is a proficient mountain biker and can give you advice and guidance.

Sightseeing

Cheddar Gorge is Britain’s largest Gorge. Formed 1 million years ago out of limestone, it’s 3 miles long and 400 feet deep! It’s a stunning site, and you might see some spectacular wildlife, including wild goats! It’s a site of special scientific interest and an area of outstanding natural beauty. The north side of the cliffs are owned by the National Trust. You can do a lovely walk from Wild Pinebeck to Cheddar. It’s a 10 minute drive from us and when you get there you could walk along the cliffs, climb Jacobs ladder, visit the caves, try the local cider and of course, the Cheddar cheese!
