Created in the reign of D. João V, after the construction of the Convent of Mafra, as a leisure park for the King and his court, the Tapada Nacional de Mafra is a representative forest and natural environment designed next to the main monument of the village. It has 819 hectares fully protected by a historic wall with 21 kilometers, in a space occupied almost entirely by a green mantle where populations of wild animals cohabit in freedom. In addition, there is a wide variety of flora on the perimeter of the Tapada. The flora of Tapada de Mafra, which has changed over time, includes species such as the cork oak, stone pine and different varieties of oak, in addition to many types of shrubs. At least three specimens were classified as Trees of Public Interest: a horse chestnut; an olaia approximately 120 years old; and a cork oak that is about 300 years old. As for fauna, birds are one of the most representative groups in the Tapada Nacional de Mafra. We can find specimens of Bonelli's eagle, eagle owl, goshawk and short-toed eagle, in addition to smaller species. In the areas near the streams, we find salamanders, frogs, tortoises and various species of snakes. As for mammals, there are, among others, fallow deer, deer, wild boar, badgers and foxes.

The old hunting area for the King is nowadays a protected area. Nice for a family visit. You can hop on the little train and enjoy a nice ride through the royal "tapada". You will also have a nice show with eagles and other Birds of prey.
