The purpose of the NPG is to increase the understanding and appreciation of the Australian people – their identity, history, culture, creativity and diversity – through portraiture.

This is a gallery for everyone, even if the Collection focuses on those who have made a significant contribution to Australia. Check out the Hermannsburg group portrait pot, Nora Heysen’s compelling 1934 self portrait (currently on loan Sept 2022) and the very large Bob Brown portrait, representing the time and narrative of the proposed damming of the Franklin River in Tasmania. Great “book shop” with quality stock is next to the cafe. Sit in the sunny outside section, which overlooks Reconciliation Place and the High Court of Australia.

This is located right next to the National Gallery of Australia and both are across from Old Parliament House. You will be able to visit them all together. The National Portrait Gallery requires a ticket and you pay for this online. Entry is not free.
