Our favourite restaurant with panoramic views over the Lac de Rabodanges. Really good food at reasonable prices.
Restaurant La Rotonde
Le Pont de Sainte-Croix

The best bakery in the immediate area (by a long way) and well worth the 7-minute drive from La Pep for a great range of breakfast patisseries and excellent bread. Just try the chocolate-almond croissants....

Parks & Nature

A walk or cycle ride of 5 km, or 10 mins by car from La pep takes you to the Roche d'Oëtre. A clifftop beauty spot with a stunning panoramic view over the forested gorge of the river Rouvre and the Normandy countryside for miles around. Dine in its pleasant restaurant and explore the visitors' centre and several nature trails. Nearby is Orne Aventure's Accrobranches (a "Go Ape" type of tree climbing adventure).

Arts & Culture

You can have a great day out in the closest town of Falaise (15-20 minutes by car), the site of the ferocious battles the "Falaise Pocket" well known to WWII history buffs. There is also an excellent new and large museum about civilian life during the war. Almost next door is another of Falaise's claims to historical fame: the huge and impressive castle of William the Conqueror, Duke of Normandy. Also worth visiting are the little houses of the mediaeval old town below the castle where William's father seduced Arlette, the innocent laundrymaid who was to become his mother. Don't miss Falaise's Saturday market, or its great aquatic centre ( `Formeo' ) for the kids.

Shopping

Amazing place in Caen for buying old French furniture, glass and tableware, and miscellaneous curiosities. A sort of permanent `brocante' in a big warehouse with loads of fascinating stuff ranging between antiques and junk. Friendly staff too, some of whom who speak good English. We've picked up many bargains here. A great place for souvenirs.

Everything Else

16 minutes south of La Pep by car, also known as the Lac de Rabodanges, created by a hydro-electric dam on the Orne. As well as lake cruises and activities like windsurfing and waterskiing (the Club Motonautique does lessons for beginners) there are also small beaches and cafes and a network of footpaths by the lake. A really nice restaurant by the lake is `La Rotonde' (see above). For horse-riding, there are child-friendly stables "La Rotourelle" near the west shore of the lake.

Head for the Channel beaches to the north (under 1 hr). You can visit pleasure beaches like Rivabella close to Ouistreham, or less busy ones west of Caen including the Normandy landing beaches and the great D-Day museum at Arromanches (just over 1hr by car). Nearby is Bayeux with its old churches and extraordinary, nearly 1000 year-old but beautifully preserved, long tapestry. This depicts in great detail and freshness the events surrounding the Battle of Hastings and the invasion of Britain by William the Conqueror in 1066.

Hire kayaks at the outdoor centre "Pont d'Ouilly Loisirs" and paddle down the Orne to Clecy for a day (or half-day if pushed). They will bring you back by car. It's a great trip through glorious countryside. Take a picnic to eat on the bank (and a change of clothes!).
