Parks & Nature

The symbol of Split! This hills and its forests are the lungs of the city, the most popular place to escape from the city bustling and chaotic pace of life during the high season in July and August. It has always been a favorite place for walking, running, jogging, climbing or riding a bike. I heartily recommend to take some time to visit this magnificent natural park.

“We are going to Bačvice…", is tune often heard around the town, words of a joyous hymn to the municipal beach, officially designated as such in 1919. Bačvice is a phenomenon of nature, a sandy beach at the heart of the city, in the vicinity of the city harbor, and it can accommodate over ten thousand people. During the low tides in springtime Bačvice turn into a split version of Copacabana where many famous soccer players first displayed their talent, where the rugby in Split was born, where even in wintertime a unique game of "picigin" is played (a sort of volleyball, played in the sea shallows with a small ball). Bačvice today represents a best known promenade for all generations.

The outdoor market - Pazar is one of the central places of life in Split, and recently its becoming also a popular destination for tourists eager to feel the local spirit. It is the place where you can still feel the spirit of Dalmatia and the Mediterranean, the colours, flavours and aromas of fresh fruits and vegetables, but also the sounds, the yelling and bargain all of the above will without a doubt be a clear clue to where you are at that moment. Of course all that you can buy on the open market can also be bought in any supermarket, even cheaper, but nothing can replace the local atmosphere.

The Fish Market is, just like Pazar, one of the central points of the city life of Split, but also an interesting architectural monument, built over 120 years ago in Secession style. It is important to note that its meaning for the citizens of Split greatly transcends this merely "physical" dimension. All that the Adriatic sea can offer comes to its tables, from sprats, picarels, sardines, mackerels, to more expensive redscorpion fish, dentex, red porgy, sea bass, lobsters, sea shells... Peškarija, as the locals call it, will make you feel the affiliation of Split and Dalmatia to the Mediterranean, its culture and civilization.

One of the most well preserved Roman buildings and it is recognized as the world’s oldest Catholic cathedral with its structure dating back to 305 AD. The cathedral was initially built as a mausoleum for Emperor Diocletian who was infamous for persecuting Christians. The emperor’s sarcophagus was later destroyed while the tomb was converted into a church in the 5th century. One of the coolest places literally, and even on a hot summer day, is the Cathedral crypt, which is now a chapel dedicated to St. Lucy. Another interesting area with visiting is the choir with its distinct 13th century Romanesque seats and pulpit carved in 1427 by Bonino da Milano.

The bell tower of the Cathedral (57m) is the most original Dalmatian Medieval architecture started in the 13th century. The bell tower was thoroughly reconstructed and somewhat altered at the turn of the 20th century. Today you can climb the steps all the way to the top of the bell tower, where a spectacular view of the entire Split awaits you. Make sure you do that!

Formerly a bustling fruit market, Trg braće Radić, which has been given the unofficial name of Voćni trg or Fruit Square in Split is now home to a number of shops and businesses. To the north of Fruit Square is Milesi Palace, an impressive Baroque structure that features a statue of Marko Marulić, a 15th-century poet, in the front of the palace. The statue was created by Ivan Mestrović, croatian famous sculptor. The square often hosts fairs and is a frequent location for television serials including the popular TV series', sagas of Split "Velo Misto".

People’s Square or Pjaca as people call it is a popular, attractive piazza on the western side of Diocletian’s Palace just outside the Iron Gate. The area is home to many restaurants and bars and dotted by beautiful stone buildings. Since the 14th century the square has been a central meeting area overlooked by an impressive Renaissance clock with a medieval sundial and belfry. On its northern side is the Town Hall, a 15th century structure where a number of art and history exhibitions are held on a regular basis during summer. Many perceive People’s Square to be the soul of the city, and one visit to the area will make you realize why.

One of the places to evolve over time is the Riva Waterfront in Split. The area speaks volumes of the city’s history and character and is undoubtedly among the most remarkable sites in the Mediterranean. Many perceive it as the city’s living room right in front of Diocletian’s Palace. It is currently the main public square spread over 250m long and 555m wide, and hosts a number of events including sports, religious processions, political rallies, and celebrations throughout the year.

The Church and the Monastery of St Francis, located on the Western part of the Riva, were built on the old early Christian site, by the grave and a small Church of St Felix, martyr from the time of Diocletian. The most valuable artwork you can see in the church is the Gothic Crucifix painting by Blaž Juraj of Trogir from the beginning of the 15th century and the sarcophagus depicting the Crossing over the Red sea, part of the sacral artwork from the Roman times. Next to the Church is a Franciscan monastery with a 13th century cloister and an opulent library with over 3000 books, among which even some from 16th century.

Although a conqueror, Napoleon's marshal Marmont is responsible for the urbanisation of Dalmatian cities, in return the citizens of Split have named their most beautiful street after him. Marmont street is not only beautiful but also historically meaningful. In 1922 a library and a reading room has been founded there for Francophiles, today Alliance Francaise. The first cinema of Split found its home there as well. A unique fish market decorates its centre, special because of the fact that you won't find flies there due to the smell of sulphur which can still be felt from the neighbouring spa. Witty contemporary fountain, called Pirja, should not be missed!

The West Coast is a kind of a seaside continuation of the Riva, a promenade stretching 623 meters in length. Paved entirely with white stone from Brač, hosting luxurious yachts tied to its coastline and with cafes and restaurants along its entire length. The West Coast is not only a place where with your coffee you can enjoy in the most spectacular view of Split, there you can also find out who are the athletes from Split who have won an Olympic medal. Along the promenade, right by the sea, bronze plates with the names, the year of the Olympic games, the city the Olympics were held in, the medal that was won and the image of the sport, are imbedded into the white stone.
