Monument Valley provides the most definitive images of the American West. The red mesas and buttes are surrounded by empty, sandy desert that has been filmed and photographed countless times over the years for movies, advertisements and holiday brochures. The valley is not a valley in the conventional sense, but rather a wide flat, sometimes desolate landscape interrupted by the crumbling formations rising hundreds of feet into the air. It lies entirely within the Navajo Indian Reservation on the Utah/Arizona border. From the visitor center there are good views across three of the valley's most photographed peaks--East and West Mitten Buttes, and Merrick Butte. You can experience the entire valley from Valley Drive, a 17-mile dirt road which starts at the visitor center. The 2-hour journey is suitable for the majority of family cars, and small to medium sized RV's.
