Free. Don't be put off by Airbnb's boring photo! I really recommend this amazing experience and insight into our history. Go underground into a real coal mine wearing your own helmet and lamp, guided by a former coal miner (children have to be over 1m tall). There's also a Miner's Canteen (chips beans and sausages etc as well as sandwiches and drinks), museum, photo gallery, different activities.

Founded in the 1147 as a Cistercian Abbey just down the hill. Dissolved in 1536 by Henry V111 it fell into disrepair. Stone from the nave and monastic buildings was recycled... I can show you blocks from the abbey in my house and barns! The abbey was restored in the 1630's by the local landowner Lord Scudamore whose children had all died at birth or infancy and was told by a local wise man if he restored the building he'd have a son who lived and this is what happened! It os now used as a parish church and also by the village for fete's and gatherings as well as holding concerts, choral workshops and theatre productions.

Obviously this isn't a beach but it's the nearest category that Airbnb lists because there are beaches along the Wye that you can steer onto to have a picnic! Lazily canoe along, pretending to be part of The Wind in the Willows. I've always seen kingfishers as well as other wild birds. It's a great and relaxing way of seeing the Herefordshire countryside. Obviously this isn't a beach but it's the nearest category that Airbnb lists because there are beaches along the Wye that you can steer onto to have a picnic! Two valleys away and another priory, this time Augustine in the Vale of Ewyas. Much more austere scenery than in the Golden Valley. Park at the priory and then make a circular walk up onto the Hatterral Ridge which forms the boundary between England and Wales. Amazing views on a clear day.
Drive up the hill, follow the lane along the ridge to the right and take first left steeply down the other side and across the ford (unless it's been raining) to Longtown. Visit the castle and then drive west 1/2 mile, ignore first left but take next one (at cross roads with brown tourist sign "Black Hill") and then 2.7 miles later turn right. There is a brown picnic sign but you might not see it until you've passed it! Park, picnic and then walk up the Black Hill (which is locally known as the Cat's Back). It's common land which is why there are no footpaths on OS map. You could make a circular walk, find the waterfall at the top of the Olchon Valley or up to Hatterral Ridge and back.
