Tonawanda is the gateway to the Erie Canal and was incorporated in 1836 and began to grow as the canal helped build and grow commerce downstate.
Fun fact- Tonawanda is home to the shortest lived NFL franchise- The Tonawanda Kardex Lumbermen. They played one game in 1921 in what is now the NFL- still a cool claim to fame
