It takes about three hours to travel the entire length of the drive on a clear day. The maximum speed limit is 35 mph. As you travel along Skyline Drive you will notice mileposts along the side of the road. These posts help you find your way through the park and help you locate areas of interest. The mileposts begin with 0.0 at Front Royal and continue to 105 at the southern end of the park. For current road conditions or alerts, click here. There are 75 overlooks that offer stunning views of the Shenandoah Valley to the west and the rolling piedmont to the east. Wildflowers put on a show all year long – in early spring, look for trillium peeking through the grass. June’s display of azaleas is spectacular. Cardinal flowers, black-eyed susans, and goldenrod keep the color vibrant right into fall, when the leaves begin to change and put on their own fall foliage show.

The Nature Foundation at Wintergreen (TWNF) exists to encourage the understanding, appreciation and conservation of the natural resources of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Central Virginia. TWNF facilitates research and education for its members and visitors, and will serve as a host site for regional, national, and international conservation efforts. Hiking maps and trail maps may be obtained from TWNF's home base, the Trillium House at Wintergreen. Robin's Nook at Trillium House offers quiet play and resources for families to spend time together with stories, puzzles and games. The trail system covers an assortment of terrain throughout its 35 miles. There are both rugged, steep slopes as well as beautiful, short strolls almost anyone can enjoy. Wintergreen lies in a section of the Blue Ridge Mountains called Old Appalachia where rock formations were formed approximately 1.1 billion years ago during a collision event called the Alleghanian orogeny. This was accomplished much like pushing the ends of a rug together, producing raised folds in the center. Plant and animal life followed and found their respective niches in this complex system of ridge lines, valleys and rock faces. Wintergreen’s forest represents what biologists call an eastern hardwood forest bio-community. It represents a portion of the most unique and diverse plant communities on the planet. The unique environment on both the valley trails and the mountain trails at Wintergreen offers hikers an unforgettable experience. The trail system maintained by The Nature Foundation and its volunteers is a portal into this natural community.
