Two minutes walk from the house. Just note that they are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, but well worth a visit on another day. Good food…value for money. It’s worth booking before going. Although weekday lunchtimes are usually quiet. A pleasant beer garden to the rear.

Sightseeing

A great day out for all the family! It’s worth making a day of it as you have to pay to park, but once there, there is plenty to do. Long or short walks, crossing the river on the stepping stones, or by bridge for the less adventurous. Take care of the water as it is fast flowing particularly after heavy rain. For younger ones, try out the Welly Walk with challenges to do along the way! Enjoy Yorkshire Dales ice cream, or the Cavendish cafe. Beautifully set in the heart of the Dales. Please note you may need to book to park ahead of time. Check out the website.

If it’s raining and you fancy a trip into Bradford this could be a good day out.. If you don’t want to drive you could get the train from Steeton which is 5 minutes up the road where you’ll need to find on street parking and walk down Station Road as the car park is being rebuilt. There is a leaflet about the museum in the house.

This is a lovely park for all ages. Enclosed area for toddlers. Large grass areas. There is a pavilion selling drinks, ice creams and snacks. It is usually only open during busy times. There are public toilets next to the pavilion. It is in Sutton the next village to Crosshills. Directions: Turn left on to the main road. Continue into the high street in Crosshills. Turn left on to Holme Lane just past the Co op which is on the right. Go past the school on the left. Keep going and you’ll see the park opposite the Baptist church. Drive on and turn left where you may be able to park. If not you can continue on and park on a residential street. 5min drive. OR you can walk the scenic route: Walk down the road at the back of the house towards Zolsha restaurant. Keeping it to your right follow the path along the main road. Cross over Clayton Hall Road. A few meters further on take the path to the right alongside the stream. Keep going until you get to a fork. Take the footbridge across the stream. Follow the path until you come to the end of the road. Turn right and keep walking up Sutton High Street until you come to the park. This walk is between 20 and 40 mins….depending on who’s walking! Suitable for a buggy.

This is great on a warm dry day….messing about in the river…ice cream….walk along the river to the narrow suspension bridge…cafe…good pub food with plenty of outside seating next to the river. You really are in the middle of nowhere with plenty to keep you entertained if you like paddling, strolling, stepping stones (a short walk along the river by the suspension bridge). If you take the path alongside the pub just before the stone road bridge, you’ll get to the stepping stones….half an hour walk approx.

This has been a new find for us during lockdown. Just 15 mins drive on the main road out of Crosshills towards Lancashire. Go through the village of Cowling, over the moor and as you come down into Laneshawbridge, look out for the brown signs pointing to the left. You’ll also see handmade signs for Lakeside Cafe. Turn left and left again into the car park. There is cafe, eating inside or outside next to the lake where there are plenty of ducks. Along to the right of the lake, is a great little play park with a zip wire and other equipment for younger ones too. If you go left out of the cafe you can walk alongside the river into the nature reserve. There is a website which is worth taking a look at. Great for adults and children of all ages!

This is the nearest train station on Station Road in Steeton. There is only on road parking in the village at the moment due to the car park being rebuilt. You then need to walk down Station Road. The best way to enter the station is from station road as seen in the photo. If you are going towards Keighley, Leeds, Bradford you’ll need the second entrance to the steps coming from Steeton village. If you are going towards Cononley, Skipton, take the first set of steps from the same road. It is unmanned so be sure to buy a ticket online or go to the machine on the platform and follow instructions there.

Local walks

You can walk from the house up to Farnhill Pinnacle. It will take you about an hour and a half. The walk comprises walking along the road and an uphill walk to the top of the moor. It is a little steep in places so good trainers or walking shoes are recommended. Not suitable for buggies or wheelchairs. Directions: Turn left onto the main road and walk up the hill towards Crosshills village. You’ll pass The Old White Bear pub on your left. Cross the main road at the pedestrian lights just before The Old Bank Restaurant. Turn right and walk the full length of Station Road on the left hand side. You’ll go past a BP garage and over a railway bridge. Before you get to the roundabout you need to drop down on to a narrow path on your left which takes you under the bypass. You will come back up on the river bridge at Kildwick. Keep on the left hand side pavement and walk towards the church. Cross the road and follow the road round the left of the church. Turn right and cross over the canal bridge. Follow the path up the hill until you come to a road. Turn left and walk for about a hundred metres until you see a track with a gate on your right. Take the track and follow it up the hill. At the point where you see a building take a left turn to continue on the moor towards the top. OR If you’re walking on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday take a right turn and you’ll find the Crag and Coffee kiosk which sells drinks and cakes! A welcome break on the way up or a reward on the way down! Continue up the hill through some trees until you come to the white pinnacle with a cross on it. Here you’ll have some stunning views over the Aire Valley and towards the Dales. There are various ways down but I would suggest you use a map!
