Heraklion city Used to be an amzing Fortress town
The fountain of Morozini (known as Lions) is one of the nicest Venetian monuments of Candia (current Heraklion). The fountain was watered by the spring of Karidaki and the water traveled about 15km in a gigantic aqueduct. The fountain takes its name from the Capitan Generale Francesco Morozini. During his rule, the aqueduct was constructed to water the thirsty town of Candia. Until then, most water came from wells and rain-storage tanks. The aqueduct was inaugurated on April 25th, 1628, i.e. on the feast day of Saint Mark, the protector of Venice.

Knossos was the most important city on Crete before the Roman Era and the center of the first brilliant European civilization, the Minoan. The palace of the city is the most visited archaeological site in Crete with more than 1.000.000 visitors per year. The palace is located just 5km south of Heraklion, atop hill Kefala next to the banks of Knosano Gorge. It can be accessed via Knossos Avenue, which connects Heraklion with Skalani village. Apart from the palace itself, the area is full with several more archaeological finds, which makes sense considering that Knossos was a town with more than 100,000 people. The palace was the seat of the legendary King Minos and has been associated with famous Greek myths, like that of Daedalus and Icarus, the Labyrinth and the Minotaur. Minos was not a person, but a series of kings with the same name (as we say Pharaoh in Egypt). He was deified and he was thought to be the son of Europa and Zeus, as described in the story of the Rape of Europe.

Slightly touristy these days, this busy, narrow agora (market), along Odos 1866 between the Meidani crossroads and Plateia Kornarou, is one of the best in Crete and has everything you need to put together a delicious picnic. Stock up on the freshest fruit and vegetables, creamy cheeses, honey, succulent olives, fresh breads and whatever else grabs you. Other stalls sell pungent herbs, leather goods, hats, jewellery and souvenirs. Cap off a spree with a coffee at one of the quaint kafeneia (coffee houses).

Beaches

The Bay of Karteros is located at the exit of the homonym Gorge Karteros, 7km east of Heraklion and extends to the east for 3.5km. It is named after the Byzantine General, Krateros, who in 824AC landed on the beach with his ships in order to liberate Crete from the Saracens, but was defeated. On the long bay, there are two settlements, Karteros and Amnissos. The area has developed so much that the two villages are now merged. The main reason for the rapid development of the area is the small distance from Heraklion and the beautiful beachfront with the fine golden sand.

Madé (or Madés) is a small coastal village located near Ligaria, 20km northwest of Heraklion and 4km east of Agia Pelagia beach. It is located near the northernmost edge of the Gulf of Heraklion, which is called Cape Bourouni of Rogdia. To get this far from Heraklion, drive on the highway to Chania and take the exit to Ligaria / Mades. Just after 1.5km you will see a sign for Madé. In front of the village there is a very small bay with a pebbly beach, which is surrounded by several rocks and the small settlement Madé. It is well organized by the local hotel which provides umbrellas and sunbeds to its customers. Nearby there are a few rooms, a mini market , a beach bar and some taverns. The beach is quiet and mostly preferred by locals who have built their summer houses here. It is ideal for fishing and snorkeling, because the rocky seabed abounds in fish. The usual problem is that Madé beach has a northern orientation, which makes it vulnerable to winds. The trademark of Mades are the two small islets opposite the west end of the beach, that are ideal for snorkeling. The name Mades is taken after the greek verb mado (break easily), named after the stones of the area that crack very easily and are very unstable.

Ligaria is located 21km north west of Heraklion and 1km east of Agia Pelagia. The Bay of Ligaria is enclosed and well protected from the frequent northwest winds blowing in the region. Nearby survives the church of Panagia, which served as the monastery Panagia Ligariani in the past. The region gets its name after the monastery, which in turn gets its name from the beautiful plant “osier” (ligaria in Greek), with the flexible stems and the beautiful flowers, which abound in the area. The beach is very beautiful with coarse sand and turquoise calm water, while the small boats create magic scenery. The east part is less protected from the waves and gathers more dirt. Instead, if you go to the west, the water is usually cleaner and the sea is flat. Smooth rocks are just near the shore, in the water, except from the west part of Ligaria, where there are some small parts with sand. It is very well organized with umbrellas, sunbeds, water sports, a diving school, beach bars, restaurants and rooms.

Ammoudara is a long sand beach which starts from River Giofyros, 1km west of the center of Heraklion and reaches the mouth of the river Almyros, 7km on the west. Ammoudara is today a suburb of Heraklion, attracting thousands of visitors every year, mainly because of its long sandy beach. The beach of Amoudara has fine brownish sand and there is a rocky strip about 50m from the beach running parallel to the beach, delineating the ancient coastline.
