Massive luxury department store with everything under one roof. Gets very crowded! Not many people know there is a roof terrace with a small cafe and there are great views over the Haussmannien buildings of central Paris.

Sambola Brazilian restaurant is a colourful, reasonably priced local joint open weekdays during lunchtime only. Great value "plat du jour" and potent caipirinha cocktails are a steal! Friendly owner; if you're lucky he'll sing and play guitar!

Fantastic pastries, one of the best bakeries in Paris and one of the remaining few in the French capital to use a wood-fired bread oven. Worth a look if you're visiting the nearby Parc des Buttes Chaumont.

Quality French food in an intimate setting in the heart of Montmartre. Many restaurants in this area are tourist traps serving reheated industrial food, this place is the real deal. A little on the pricey side but the grub is good.

One of our fave restaurants, off the beaten track (tucked away in a back street behind the Buttes Chaumont park) in the northeastern 19th district. Great food and wine and the owner is quite a character! Popular place with locals.

A safe option if you're after good food and romantic French atmosphere, with a lovely canal-side setting. We tend to take out of town visitors here as there is pretty good food and wine as well as good, friendly service (rare in Paris, it has to be said!).
