Foodies Paradiso

What better way to start off sampling great food than in Downtown, Uptown & All Around Town Ocean Springs where you are rarely ever disappointed. From Po-Boys at the well-know local hangout of BB's Poboys & Seafood to fine steaks at Phoenicia, you have your choices of some of the top restaurants in the local area. Below are a few of my favorite places for coffee, tea, pastries & great food.
French Kiss Pastries is a decadent pastry shop with freshly made European inspired desserts and pastries; it also offers daily lunch specials. It is located right downtown on Washington Avenue just south of Government Street. Check fkpastries.com for hours. When I am downtown, I always take a moment to stop by for the delicious pastry and often that chicken salad croissant with a small cup of soup. Yummy!

Starting off their 60th year of making donuts(1960-2020) in Ocean Springs Tato-Nut has put into play one of their famous king cake donuts. Best donuts in downtown Ocean Springs. You will often find a sampling of donut holes at the Bird House upon checkin along with good old Barq's Rootbeer, which started in Biloxi on the gulf coast in 1871.

Great place to hang out for a group of friends to eat & drink on the weekends; you can also catch a local band. It's not fancy but very relaxing and reasonably priced. Good sandwiches, wings & great gravy fries!

Charred is a beautiful and cozy steakhouse. It is like cooking at home but even better. You can tell by the quality of the meat that they employ top culinary experts and source their products locally. Nothing could be this good if mass-produced, frozen or pre-cooked. I'll bet my green thumb on it! My favorite is the grilled oysters.

"A favorite among locals with appreciation of fine cuisine, Phoenicia Gourmet Restaurant sits in the renowned artisan city of Ocean Springs on the gulf coast of Mississippi." Facebook I pretty much echo this comment for sure; the seafood is fresh and always incredible. They have a varied menu and wonderful offerings of the most delicious food ever. I love their speciality breakfasts. Check out the Breakfast specials between 7A-10A Monday thru Friday. AWESOME!

Drinks & Nightlife

"Lots of towns boast live music a few nights a week. But Ocean Springs weekends never start later than Thursdays, and often on Wednesdays. So a little asking around is likely to result in landing at a spot on almost any night where someone is holding forth. And in Ocean Springs, everyplace is Cheers." Wonderlust by Andy Taggart Those words voice my sentiments exactly.
Everyone loves a good live show and a great drink - enjoy both of those things at The Office Bar and Lounge!

A great BBQ spot in ocean springs but it can get crowded, so come early on the weekends. Their sauces are delicious and the baked beans very generous with the meats mixed in. The service is good, as is the location. I like their BBQ nachos

Sightseeing

Shearwater Pottery is a small family-owned pottery in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, United States founded in 1928 by Peter Anderson (1901-1984), with the support of his parents, George Walter Anderson and Annette McConnell Anderson. You can visit, not only the showroom and purchase pottery, but the working studios where pottery is still made by hand with many of the historical machines from the early part of the 20th century. Peter Anderson's son Jimmy and grandson Peter Wade still carry on a long family tradition of art. As a footnote, I had the privilege of working right alongside Jimmy and Peter during 2007-2009, pouring slip-cast pottery. It was a most wonderful experience for me.

Parks & Nature

The Davis Bayou area has a nature trail that starts on the road to the Davis Bayou Campground and Boat Ramp. Enjoy the sights, sounds and scents of Mississippi's natural coastline. This wild and forested area adjacent to a salt marsh is fast becoming a rare and exceptional place. By hiking the Nature's Way Trail you will have the opportunity to pause, sense and enjoy those pleasures which were once common on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Camping is also available and information can be obtained about the barrier islands nearby: primitive Camping is available on Horn, Petit Bois and East Ship Islands, accessible by boat. I love to ride my bicycle down in the park from my home. Great place!

Arts & Culture

The Mississippi Gulf Coast is a destination rich in art and unique character. Not only can you connect to the natural beauty and deep culture and diversity, but you can venture off the beaten path and experience what South Mississippi has to offer you in a way that will allow you to create memories for a lifetime.
The Walter Anderson Museum of Art has a wonderful collection of works by Walter Inglis Anderson, American contemporary master, whose works includes depictions of the plants, animals, and people of the Gulf Coast. I often wander thru the museum and just stare in awe at the wonderful interpretation of Walter's flora and fauna.

The Mary C. O’Keefe Cultural Center of Arts and Education is housed in a landmark 1927 public school building. It features performing, culinary and visual art events and collections for exhibitions and educational programs highlighting the history of the area. Check the website for upcoming events at www.themaryc.org They have some of the most unique art exhibitions at the Mary C; from legos, history, pottery, paintings, and sculptures. Performances in the theatre range from opera to the Delta Blues; this is a place with something for everyone. I was a Julia helping in "Becky's Kitchen" assisting in cooking classes and dinners offered for individuals and groups. That was so much fun

Grocery Stores

Local grocery stores are great to shop at if you do not like shopping at Walmart. We have that in Ocean Springs, but when I am in a hurry I just head to the local grocery to avoid the business of the larger stores.
Founded in 1960 by Anthony J. Rouse, Sr., and family-owned company has 55 grocery stores: 47 in Louisiana, three on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and five in Lower Alabama. Rouses brings to Ocean Springs a touch of New Orleans with food items prepared and ready to grill, bake, or fry. You can pick up soups and salads to eat and wonderful baked items from their deli and bakery. I always head here when I am looking for something hard to find in other grocery stores. This is where to shop for those specality items.

Winn-Dixie is just down the street from the Bird House, just steps away. I head here for all my needs when I am in a hurry and do not want to travel down the road. They have great meats and a good selection of other items.
