Lovely pub in a beautifully renovated Georgian building overlooking the racecourse. Dog and child friendly. If you want to eat here booking is recommended as they tend to get very busy. The Architect has a lovely beer garden (often serving BBQ food) for those visiting in the warmer months.

Istanbul BBQ is (yes, you've guessed it!) a Turkish restaurant. It always seems to be busy, which must be due to their warm service and delicious food. Booking is recommended to ensure you secure a table.

This restaurant serves Southern Indian cuisine and so they are a little different from the usual. We recommend their Dosa dishes - Dosa are a kind of pancake made from fermented rice (but don't let that put you off as they are yummy!) available with a number of meaty or vegetarian fillings. On which note, this place is a good choice for vegetarians as they offer a lot of veggie options. They also offer a takeaway service, although we have noticed it is a little more expensive for takeaways than other Indians in the city.

This recently opened vegetarian and vegan Indian restaurant is just around the corner from the flat on Brook Street. My vegan friend says she would eat there every day if she could. As a bonus for those on a budget, you can also bring your own alcohol.

This traditional, family friendly Italian offers great value for money and a lively, fun atmosphere. Booking is recommended as they get very busy. P.S. If you find a Beauty and the Beast book anywhere in the restaurant, it's my daughters - lost on a meal out months ago, but STILL not forgotten! :)

Just around the corner from the flat on Brook Street, is Perogi, Chester's number one TripAdvisor rated place to eat. This small, cosy family-run venue offers traditional homemade Polish dumpings which you can watch being made by owners Voytek and Katarzyna. Sightseeing

There's usually something going on here and even if there are no art exhibitions or recitals when you visit, the cathedral is still worth looking around. Also make sure you check out the lovely Grade II-listed Georgian Abbey Square next to the cathedral. The Bishop's House is here and also look out for the two sandstone cottages built in 1626. We lived in number 13 for a while, so if you want some insider information on the interior, just ask.

Chester's racecourse is the oldest and smallest in England, known as the 'Roodee' to locals. When there are no races on, this is a popular place for dog walkers.

No visit to Chester would be complete without a visit to the historic walls. Their total length is 1.8 miles and a walk around them is a great way to see some of the city sights. Things of interest to look out for as you walk around include: the Roman Gardens, the Roman Amphitheatre, the Racecourse, the Water Tower & Gardens, the Eastgate Clock, the Recorder's Steps, and Watergate.

Parks & Nature

The Groves is a great place for a stroll. Come rain or shine, this area is always busy with dog walkers, families and sightseers taking in the river views and enjoying ice-cream or hot chocolate (depending upon the weather). If you're lucky you'll be able stop and listen to some music from the bandstand, or you might want to board a boat for a river cruise or an open top bus for a tour of the city. If you want to stretch your legs further, cross the river via the Queen's Park suspension bridge to get to The Meadows. This large area of open grassland will make you feel like you're in the countryside and is the perfect place for letting canines and kiddies alike run off excess energy.

This attraction is superb value for money. For just a few pounds you get to see and take part in a falconry display, and also get up close to and handle the birds and other animals. The staff here are knowledgeable, caring and passionate about what they do - it is clear that each and every bird and animal is expertly looked after and loved. There is also a little cafe and a play area for the kids - a low cost must do for families.

Getting Around

Apparently it's not just an interesting new architectural addition to the city. Sources have confirmed that Chester's new bus interchange is actually a great place from which to catch a bus - rumour has it that you can easily get to the zoo or even venture further afield from here.

Essentials

Chester's newest supermarket, a mulit-million pound Waitrose, is just a 6 to 8 minute walk across the canal (sadly by bridge not miracle) from the flat. It's worth noting that this Waitrose boasts its own bar - handy to know in case you exhaust Chester's wealth of atmospheric and historic drinking establishments and find yourself gagging for a modern, cold, florescent strip lit environment in which to down a relaxing beer.
