Herenstraat boasts a wide array of specialized shops, some of which are located in historic buildings. Many shops are family-owned businesses going back generations. The personal touch and historic surroundings make shopping in the area enjoyable and pleasant. On Saturday is more fun with the addition of the weekly market and its green grocer, fishmonger, stalls selling poultry, the candy shop, and many more market regulars. Early birds can start their rounds at 8:00. The market stalls are dismantled at 16:00. Every Wednesday from May to October there is an antiques, curiosities and book market around the Oude Kerk. The Herenstraat may be reached by bus 23 and 30 and tram 1, 10 and 15, by bike, or by car. There are plenty of parking options in the city centre. For more information, see www.oud-rijswijk.nl

Sightseeing

Older children will enjoy a visit to Overvoorde, where a number of World War II bunkers can still be seen. It was built in the mid-1960s at the height of the Cold War, as the civil defense coordination centre in the event of a (nuclear) emergency. The interior has been fully restored. Several bunkers are regularly open to the public. A 45-minute film explains the government’s approach to civil defense in the post-war years. For further information, see www.ncbb.nl.

The Herenstraat and the surrounding area are the historic heart of Oud-Rijswijk. You can not miss the Oude Kerk (Old Church). In front of the church entrance is a water pump dating from 1831, with a lion’s head spout. Thankfully you won’t have to go far to find something to drink – cafes serving coffee, tea and soft drinks are in abundant supply. The tearoom on the corner of the Herenstraat and Kerkstraat is one option. From this corner you have a beautiful view of the oldest stone plaque in Rijswijk, at Herenstraat 87a. All the houses in this row are registered national historical monuments (Rijksmonumenten). Note also the seventeenth century clock gable above the restaurant at number 83/85. On the right-hand side of this block is the Poortje van Verlaan (Verlaan Gate). is now the parking lot. Diagonally across from the Oude Kerk is the Rijswijk Museum. At the museum information desk you may pick up a copy of the Walking Tour of Oud-Rijswijk Monuments, available in Dutch and English. The walk takes about one and a half hours, and traverses the prettiest spots in the Rijswijk historical centre. If you walk along the Tollenstraat, directly across the street from the museum, on the right you will see several nineteenth-century buildings, housing the Michelin-starred restaurant Paul van Waarden, a wine shop, and other businesses. The wine shop also offers tastings. At the end of the street, go right on the Schoolstraat. At number 59 you will find the Boone grocery, which was named the best greengrocer’s in the Netherlands by Elsevier magazine in 2007. Further up the street on the left is a quaint old gate leading to Park Hofrust. This former estate originally consisted of a manor house, stables, outbuildings, a gardener’s and coach house, gardens, ponds, lanes, a meadow and plantations. The manor house was remodeled in the nineteenth century and served as town hall between 1922 and 1967. The Oude Raadhuis (Old Town Hall) is used today as a multipurpose service centre. The house, gate and summer house are listed historical landmarks. For more information: www.protestantsrijswijk.nl www.museumryswyk.nl The old city centre may be reached by taking bus 23, or trams 1 or 15. Paid and free parking is available in the vicinity.
