A favourite cafe on Gertrude Street. I find myself there most days that i'm home. If the weather is fine a table on the street is the perfect spot to enjoy a coffee and watch the quiet buzz of street go by. Archies owner Shar has worked hard to deliver a venue with a really attentive team and an incredible menu. Open 7 days for breakfast and lunch - Their coffee is magnificent and you'll find the coffee machine is always working overtime keeping the locals and visitors caffeinated . Try the crispy eggs or rockling burger.

Andrew McConnell's Marion wine bar is one of the best places to wine and eat on Gertrude street. This is a great restaurant and is suitable if you're looking to treat yourself to a very nice meal. Its also open for breakfast on the weekend (which is quite reasonably priced).

I enjoy a plant based diet - so Smith & Daughters and their sister venue Smith & Deli is one of the places I frequent most. Its gained worldwide recognition for its trailblazing approach to vegan cuisine. Founded by Shannon Martinez Smith & Daughters and Smith & Deli have become icons of the Melbourne culinary scene, arguably redefining the entire concept of vegan food. I'd recommend their meat ball (meat free) sub and Tiramisu.

I'd probably put this at the top of my list for favourite local places to eat - A pescatarian / vegie / vegan Japanese influenced menu that is very well priced and excellent quality. I'd recommend any of the curries and a Yuzu Soda (with or without vodka) has got to be one of the most refreshing drinks going round. The communal table works really well for solo diners or couples. Get there before 7 to grab a table.

Gabriel is like stepping inside an espresso bar from the 1950s – with a bit of a modern edge. Named in honour of Gabriel de Clieu who introduced coffee to French colonies in the 1720s. Its a beautifully designed cafe that sits at the corner of Gertrude and George Street. The best seat in the house is the corner part of the rounded booth on the right side when you walk in. The menu is excellent and varied - the perfect place for brunch seven days a week.

Sake, music and some delicious small plates to share. Considered to be one of the most authentic izakaya dining experience in Fitzroy. The owners Fumi Tamura and and his wife Takako arrived onto Gertrude Street in 2019 - their sake represents a new era for the Japanese icon - many are unfiltered, unpasteurised and utterly delicious – a bit like natural wine. If you are a fan of the delicious fruit - Yuzu, they have some many options on the menu. They don't accept bookings. Mon – Sat, 12 pm – 11 pm Closed Sundays and Public Holidays.

Japanese Food, Coffee and Concept Store - CIBI is run by husband and wife Zenta and Meg Tanaka who has been Collingwood's bridge to Tokyo since 2008. They wanted to create a sense of sharing food with neighbours, with the community - Their Japanese breakfast has been on the weekend menu since day one. It includes rice, grilled salmon, tamagoyaki (rolled omelette), potato salad, seasonal vegetables and miso soup. You can also add nori, umeboshi (sour salted plum), natto (fermented soybeans) and pickled vegetables. The dish is based on what Meg’s grandma used to cook for her every morning, using produce grown by the family. Just like her grandma, Meg packs her miso soup with vegetables like daikon, eggplant or snow pea, depending on the season. Its a relaxing (and serene) spot to sit and relax. The homewares section has a collection of high quality Japanese pieces.

A great place for a walk or a jog. Walk down Gertrude street towards the city (left out the front door) and you'll find yourself at the World Heritage listed Royal Exhibition Building. The World Heritage Environs Area Precinct as a place of historical, social architectural and aesthetic significance. The fountain to the left of the building is a must see. At a point in Melbourne's history Little Napier Street was ground zero for Brothels, Sly Grog Shops and Prostitutes - the conditions in this area were the worst in Australia. The same can be said about many of the laneways and streets around Fitzroy. A Police officer working in Fitzroy made the following statement about the area - I have no hesitation in saying that Fitzroy South is the home of all classes of Criminals, Prostitutes and other dirty lazy people. The reason why these unfortunate class of people take up their residence in Fitzroy is that Fitzroy South is very close to the city of Melbourne, can be reached without paying a fare and cheap rooms can be obtained from lodging-houses.

If i'm stepping out of Fitzroy and wanting to show a friend around Melbourne that has never been here before I will usually start with the Shrine of Remembrance. Quite possibly the most sacred building we have in our city - and because of that it occupies the most prominent location - its free to visit - each year on ANZAC day (Australian and New Zealand Army Core) remembrance days are held at this sight. The view from the top of the Shrine is incredible and allows you to look 360 degrees around Melbourne - looking north to the city and Fitzroy as well as south towards St Kilda and the beach. After a visit to the Shrine a walk through the Royal Botanical Gardens (located immediately next to the Shrine) is also a must.

The best view in Melbourne. This will certainly be one of the more fancy recommendations on my Melbourne and Fitzroy guide - at the top of the Rialto building 525 Collins Street (at one point the tallest building in Melbourne) exists Lui Bar - attached to the iconic Vue De Monde restaurant - Lui Bar is a great spot to have a cocktail and a small snack and take in an incredible view of Melbourne from above. I like recommending this bar rather than the Eureka tower observation deck as theres no charge to get in - but of course the drinks aren't free. Dusk or early evening is the pick of the times to be up there - a reservation is not required - though you will need to be in at least a collar or semi formal - no shorts permitted.

Capital City Trail is a smooth, flat 29.6 kilometre circuit that is a fabulous way of seeing Melbourne by cycle or walk. The Capital City Trail is a shared path for bikes and pedestrians that loops for around Melbourne. It starts at Southbank following the Yarra past landmarks such as the Victorian Arts Centre, the Royal Botanic Gardens, the MCG, Melbourne Park and Como House, Herring Island Environmental Sculpture Park, Burnley Gardens, Dights Falls and Yarra Bend Park. For the second half of the Capital City Trail, you follow the old Inner Circle Railway through Royal Park, Moonee Ponds Creek towards Docklands, pass the Polly Woodside Maritime Museum and then the Exhibition Centre, before making it back to Southbank. Along the way, there are many worthwhile stops including the Abbotsford Convent, the Melbourne Zoo at Royal Park and the 'very Melbourne' neighbourhoods of Fitzroy North and Brunswick. Keen to hire an Electric bike - check out Jot Bikes - Electric Bike Rentals & Sales in Carlton.

The Story of Fitzroy is the story of boom and bust and the characters that made up our suburb over the years. Michael Shelford is a writer who specialises in Australian true crime. One of his areas of interest is Fitzroy, Melbourne’s oldest Suburb: In the early 1900's it was considered by Police to be “the home of Melbourne’s criminals and the home of criminals generally”. Fitzroy was also the home of a high percentage of Melbourne’s brothels and most of its sly grog shops (speak easies). It was the only area of Melbourne considered so dangerous that police were directed to work the beat in duos after dark. Shortly after WWI Melbourne’s criminal community split into 2 rival factions, sparking Australia’s greatest ever gang war: the ‘Fitzroy Vendetta’. The Fitzroy True Crime Tour takes you on a journey from the suburb’s wealthy beginnings through to the heights of the gang war and its repercussions. Tour Michael shares insights gathered from original police files as he takes you past the former brothels, sly grog shops (speak easies) and crime dens of the era. A 32-page tour booklet puts faces to the characters featured. To book search Melbourne Historical Crime Tours. The tour begins at 1pm every Sunday on the corner of Gertrude and Brunswick out the front of The Workers Club.

Our Botanic Gardens are a very special part of Melbourne. If you're visiting Australia for the first time this is a great opportunity to experience lots of native Australian planting and a quiet relaxing stroll through the gardens.

I love taking out of town friends to The State Library, the reading room is iconic and a visual delight. The Library also houses a significant piece of Australian history - the armour of our most famous bushranger, Ned Kelly.

A small and yet iconic independent bookshop in one of the great parts of Melbourne's central business district. Paperback has occupied this sight since the 1960's. The exterior will charm you and gives a nod to the how old independent stores once were in Melbourne - A great range of books and equally competitive with pricing. It almost feels like you're stepping into a library of sorts - a quiet whisper is required.

Now i don't expect you'll have a costume party to attend whilst in Melbourne - but if you do (or even if you don't) Rose Chongs is arguably the most iconic premises on Gertrude street (after the Builders Arms of course) Its cliental include Beyonce and Jay Z to name drop a few famous customers over the years. Rose Chong has occupied Gertrude street for decades with the support of her flamboyant staff known as 'the Chongettes' - a visit just to have a poke around is always a fun time.
