Crete's most spectacular beaches are often the hardest to reach, and Balos is certainly one of them. Excursion boats depart from Kissamos (40 kilometers west of Chania), but it's more fun to hire a vehicle, preferably a 4WD jeep, and visit independently.

Matala is located 68km southwest of Heraklion, where the plain Messara meets Asteroussia Mountains. This is one of the most popular tourist destinations of Crete and certainly the most famous beach of south Heraklion prefecture. It is famous for the carved caves in the rocks and the hippies of the ‘70s. It is located close to Phaestus, the second largest palace of the Minoan civilization.
The secluded beaches by village Anydri, also known as Gialiskari or Dialiskari, are surely some of the most beautiful beaches of West Crete. Gialiskari is located 4km east of Paleochora and 80km South of Chania city. The beaches are the easternmost part of the coastline of Paleochora, having an overall length of 18km.

Kedrodasos (i.e. juniper wood) is an amazing beach, located 76km southwest of Chania and 1km east of the famous Elafonissi lagoon. The beach is full with juniper trees (mistakenly confused with cedars) and sanddunes. These are the small twisted junipers (juniper species are Juniperus oxycedrus subsp. macrocarpa and Juniperus phoenicea). If you ever visit the beach, you should note that the trees are very fragile and need respect. The "cedar" grove covers a big area of about 11 hectares and is a magnificent place. It is a wonderful choice for swimming and a favorite beach for naturists. It is a very nice beach with white sand and some smooth and flat rocks in places. Fortunately, there are no facilities nearby, making this secluded beach, one of the latest untouched paradises in Europe. Moreover, since the beach is secluded, you should keep it clean and not littered. The beach is protected to some point from the winds that usually blow in the neighboring Elafonissos. The European path E4 crosses the beach (there are yellow and black signs on the way).

The main beach of Frangokastelo is truly magnificent, with sand and shallow turquoise waters, ideal for children and families. It is well organised and is quite busy in peak summer months.

East and west of the river Xidas, two sandy beaches with shallow water are formed, open to north winds. Xidas and Maistrali beaches, as they are called respectively, are very well organised and all common tourist facilities and services are provided there.

Georgioupolis beach is sandy with dunes in places and shallow waters. It is very well organized with lifeguards and is ideal for children. However, if it is windy, high attention is required because of the sea currents. Umbrellas, showers, food and drinks are available on the beach. 700m east of the port, the beach "breaks" into two parts, because of the river Perastikos. The most important are the 12th century cloth for covering the altar, the icons of St. John the Theologian (16th century), St. Nicholas (17th century) and the icons of the painter Skordilis: the Enthroned Christ, Living Spring and the Second Coming (1635-1645).

Part of the building was built during the Venetian period, the first floor was built in Turkish Era.
The exhibited objects are accompanied by explanatory texts, photographs, drawings, models and are enriched with new exhibits every year. It includes 7 rooms with the themes: Kamarospito (arched house), Silk, Pottery, Kopaneli (lace), Stone carving, Church, Wood carving, History.
