The Ffestiniog Railway runs from Porthmadog on the coast to Blaenau Ffestiniog in the hills, passing through the spectacular scenery of the Snowdonia National Park. Many of our trains are steam hauled, some date back to Victorian times! The railway is just under 14 miles long and the journey takes around 1 hour and 10 minutes each way. For younger children, a shorter journey may be more appropriate. In just half an hour from Porthmadog or Blaenau Ffestiniog the train arrives at Tan Y Bwlch. Alight here for the nature trail to Llyn Mair picnic site. The Welsh Highland Railway is Snowdonia's newest railway. Trains start a spectacular 25-mile scenic journey from beneath the castle walls at Caernarfon. The trains, hauled by the world's most powerful narrow gauge steam locomotives, climb from sea level to over 650ft on the foothills of Snowdon, before zig-zagging dramatically down the steep hillside to reach Beddgelert, nestling in the heart of the National Park, then through the magnificent Aberglaslyn Pass and on to Porthmadog.

Spectacularly sited Harlech Castle seems to grow naturally from the rock on which it is perched. Like an all seeing sentinel, it gazes out across land and sea, keeping a watchful eye over Snowdonia. The English monarch Edward I built Harlech in the late 13th century to fulfil this very role. It was one of the most formidable of his 'iron ring' of fortresses designed to contain the Welsh in their mountain fastness. There is a 200 foot long stairway which still leads from the castle down to the cliff base: a secret escape route!

Portmeirion is a village located on a private peninsula overlooking Cardigan Bay on the coast of Snowdonia, surrounded by woodlands and sandy beaches that was built between 1925 and 1976, by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis, who wanted to show how development could enhance the natural landscape. It is a premier visitor attraction in Wales, and welcomes about 225,000 visitors every year! (Older visitors may be interested to know that the 1960s TV series ‘The Prisoner' was filmed here.) The grounds are open daily until 19:30, so there is plenty of time to explore the village, gardens and woods. Free, guided tours of the village are available daily, with the last tour starting at 15:30. You will be taken on a short, but informative, journey into the Village, and discover details of the its history from your friendly guide. There are a number of different areas to explore, plus woodland walks to enjoy, and a number of gardens to explore. On the main driveway, there is a contemporary styled brasserie at Castell Deudraeth, which gives free afternoon entry to Portmeirion in the price of a two course lunch. Contains playground and sandy beach for kids to play on. You can also save on the full admission price if you visit after 15:30. Portmeirion is an exciting environment for children of all ages, making it a great location for a fantastic family day out.

Aside from the frankly mental slide situation, all the usual adventure play excitement is here from ball pools and mini maze to swing balls and scramble nets, loads to entertain and exhaust even the hardiest kid. There is of course an under 4s' zone too, which features soft construction blocks, small slide and loads of bits and bobs for them to scramble around and climb on! On the top floor, there's Gog's Driving School where there's a fleet of varying vehicles ready for you to take a spin round the racetrack. Plus, there's a Laser Space Sport arena, where you can get some zero contact warfare action and zap at stuff with infra red equipment. Cool! And when they're tired enough to take some education, the mini museum on site here offers some interesting and interactive displays on local history.

Your family won’t feel like a fish out of water on this day out. Discover what lurks at the bottom of the Irish Sea at Anglesey Sea Zoo. Rather than large sharks, tropical fish or sea turtles take the time to discover fascinating creatures from around the coast in the UK. There’s far more to our waters than you might think including octopus, lobster, spiny seahorses, conger eels and even small cat sharks! You can learn all about these animals in the daily talks, feeding display, and interactive sessions. Your inquisitive divers can also pay a visit to the lobster hatchery; a pool built specifically to help the UK’s dwindling population of lobsters thrive. For a special treat let your little one pick their very own pearl. They'll be able to watch as the oyster opens and its pearl will be set in jewellery for you on site. Fairbourne Steam Railway travels two and a half miles between Fairbourne and Penrhyn Point where it connects with a ferry which takes passengers across the Afon Mawddach to Barmouth. Some of the trips they allow footplate passengers, who can ride up front throughout with the driver! At the station there's also an extensive model G-Scale Railway which kids and enthusiasts will love to have a look at. Independent of the Railway, the Barmouth Ferries operate when trains run from Easter onwards so you could potentially add a little jaunt on the water to your transport day out! Take the bus to get there and then all you've got to do for a full house is find some way of getting airborne! Nearby located near to Beach Halt in Penrhyn Corner Pay-and-Display car park there is a children's playground with regular play equipment ok for kids around 2 to 10. Across the road, behind the Penrhyn Amusements, there is a commercial children's Play Park with bouncy castle, crazy golf, trampolining and mini bumper cars all available on a pay and play basis. So it's a nice little stop on it's own with smalls, or with slightly bigger kids who demand a bit more it's good in conjunction with the amusements and the golf.
