My favorite beaches

Plaka is not only the best beach in Naxos, it’s one of the best beaches in Greece. Its wide expanse of golden sand stretches down for 4 km along the west coast, making it the longest uninterrupted beach on the island. At its north end, called Maragas Beach, you’ll find the bulk of Plaka Beach’s restaurants, beach clubs, and a smattering of hotels. Traveling south, the amenities trail off, giving way to long expanses of sand and sea.

Agios Prokopios is a popular beach for families and younger travelers. Angled toward the southwest, the beach is naturally protected from the wind, making its water extraordinarily clear and tranquil. Most of the beach’s restaurants, beach clubs, hotels, and markets are at its southeastern end, while the northwestern point near its namesake church is quiet. This is the easiest beach to reach from Naxos Town by bus. During high season is very crowded, but you should not miss out swimming in its crystal clear turquise waters.

Taking the road to the southeast part of Naxos, visitors can discover a wild and secluded natural landscape. This is where, just 17.5 km from the small fishing port of Moutsouna and 54 km from Naxos Town, lies the beach of Panermos. This little bay, that attracts many people lately, is among the most secluded beaches in Naxos, totally off the beaten track. This sandy beach with the crystal water is partly organized and has only few palm trees for natural shade. There is a small cafeteria behind the beach where you can have something to drink or eat, while some SUP boards can be also rented. For those interested, there is a boat tour that starts off Panermos and realizes mini cruises to close, worth-visiting beaches on the southern part of the island, non accessible by car. The tour departs early in the morning and can drop you on any of the beaches and come and get you later during the day.

Aliko Naxos: Aliko is a wonderful beach on the south western side of Naxos Cyclades. Located only 18 km south of Naxos Town and just after the beaches of Kastraki and Glyfada, Aliko is lovely place to relax away from the crowded resorts of the island. This special region consists of many small bays with soft white sand and crystal water. Some tamarisk trees on the shore provide shade to visitors, while the beach is not organized with sunbeds and umbrellas. Above the beach of Aliko, there is a unique cedar forest with marvelous sand dunes. This forest has been declared a protected natural area and creates an exotic landscape.

The incredibly beautiful beach of Mikri Vigla on Naxos island is located 12 kilometres away from the capital and consists in two wonderful sandy beaches separated by an impressive hill. - The northern beach of Mikri Vigla beach is wonderful, with soft golden sand and crystalline turquoise waters and is blessed by the meltemi (north winds specific to the Cyclades) which make it an ideal place for wind/kitesurfing. For that reason, the beach is an internationally famous kitesurfing and windsurfing spot and has 2 good clubs for renting high quality material and take courses. - The southern beach of Mikri Vigla (on the other part of the hill) is an endless sandy beach (also called Sahara or Limanakia) with amazing crystal waters; because it is protected from the meltemi winds, it is reccommended for family holidays. A typical greek tavern is also located there.

Psili Ammos Beach in Naxos island, Cyclades: Psili Ammos is a small sandy beach on the eastern side of Naxos island, in short drive from the fishing port of Moutsouna. Located 45 km south east of Naxos Town, this is a secluded place with soft fine sand and crystal water. Psili Ammos beach is not organized with sunbeds and umbrellas and its secluded environment gives visitors all the relaxation they need. Enjoy the wonderful view to the open sea until the small island of Donoussa. The cedar trees that line up the beach offer valuable shade to visitors.

The beach of Kastraki is located just after Sahara and is a beautiful golden sandy beach with crystalline waters. A few accommodations can be found behind the beach. Kastraki is long and winding with lots of different bays. The area is quite unspoiled and surprisingly few people make their way down this beach. There is a slight wind but it doesn't deter from a visit. There are interesting rock formations just out into the clear water.

This beach is located between Pyrgaki and Agiassos. It is a beautiful little bay composed of 2 beaches. The second beach is more difficult to access. There is a cave there offering plenty of shadow.

Pyrgaki is one of the most beautiful sandy beaches of Naxos that reflect the peace and serenity of the island. It is located in the southwestern coast of the island at a distance of 19 km south of Chora. This beautiful beach has some umbrellas and sunbeds for tourists, while the close restaurant also serves coffees, drinks and snacks. The beach is frequently affected by the winds, so it is a nice spot for windsurfing. The shallow waters are a great advantage for children and the small forest areas form an unusual scenery. Driving south, the peripheral road of Chora will end at Pyrgaki. Other lovely beaches in the area are Sahara, Kastraki and Mikri Vigla.

Location: 11 km north of Chora Description: Amitis is a small, isolate beach on the way from Chora to Apollonas. It doesn't have many visitors, while the wind is strong sometimes.
