Drinks & Nightlife

This Honky Tonk bar and concert venue stays lively and loud with its usual crowd of booze hounds, a Nintendo Game Boy that only sometimes works, a cigarette-ringed outdoor patio, and a steady lineup of live music. The bubbly sourdough pizza crust has just the right amount of crispiness, and each 12-inch pie, like the Cosmic Dancer topped with mozzarella, feta, mushroom, apple, and onion, is named after songs from David Bowie, T. Rex, and other icons. There’s also its signature Frito pie, which involves a pile of Fritos smothered in fiery chili and Rotel cheese sauce, and then topped with green onions, lettuce, tomatoes, and a helping of sour cream to appease the heat.

A cozy local watering hole, This comfortable bar, and restaurant focuses on fine whiskey, bourbon, and elevated pub grub. SINGLE BARREL BOURBONS Every year, we take some of our longtime staff and fly them to Kentucky to hand-select Single Barrel Bourbon. These exclusive Whiskeys are only available at our bars and their shelf lives are short, as we oftentimes sell out in a matter of months. Sometimes even sooner than that. While we could just order our selections through the mail—the most common way to do this— we strongly believe in the experience of our hardworking staff selecting the whiskey where it was created, aged, and perfected. To date, we have selected Single Barrels of Elmer T. Lee, Buffalo Trace, Elijah Craig, Old Weller Antique 107 (multiple times), Weller Special Reserve, Weller Full Proof, Old Forester, and Stagg. Plus we also have our own single variety 100% Espadin Mezcal, selected by our staff in Mexico from Banhez Distillery. DRINK WHERE YOU LIVE We tried to open the Old Gold in 2006. We actually opened the Old Gold in 2011. Truth be told, we didn't know what we were doing back then. Hell, maybe we still don't know what we are doing. But in those five years, we plotted and schemed and dreamed up a way to open a bar in our little corner of the Overlook Neighborhood. In the years that have passed, we've been there to pour you some whiskey after a long day. Or to cook dinner for your family. Maybe both. We've hosted birthday parties for everyone from toddlers to grandparents (and everyone in between). We've hosted weddings and we've hosted wakes. We've just been there. So that's us. We live here. We drink here. And hopefully, that never changes.

Biketown, also known as Biketown PDX, is a bicycle-sharing system in Portland, Oregon, that began operation on July 19, 2016. The system is owned by the Portland Bureau of Transportation and operated by Lyft, with Nike, Inc. as the title sponsor. E-Scooter Rules in Portland: WEAR A HELMET. Oregon law requires you to wear a helmet while riding an e-scooter. (Not wearing one could result in a citation and a $25 fine.) You can rent a helmet at Cycle Portland Bike Tours. YIELD TO PEDESTRIANS. Anyone riding an e-scooter is always required to yield to pedestrians. STAY OFF THE SIDEWALK. Riding e-scooters on the sidewalk is prohibited. The only time an e-scooter may be on the sidewalk is if it is already parked, being parked on the curb, or being walked. RIDE IN THE BICYCLE LANE. Ride your scooter with the flow of traffic in a bicycle lane. It is okay to use the vehicle lane when there is no bike lane. (Pro tip: If you can’t spot a visible bike lane, ride your e-scooter on the right side of the lane nearest the sidewalk.) PARK ON THE CURB. Never block the sidewalk with an e-scooter. E-scooters must be parked on the sidewalk as close to the curb as possible. It is prohibited to park an e-scooter in any way that blocks pedestrian traffic. (It is especially important that access to sidewalk wheelchair ramps remains unobstructed.) ONE PERSON PER SCOOTER. That’s all! RIDE WITH CARE. Keep e-scooting fun for everybody by riding with care: Be courteous to other travelers, pedestrians, and folks with disabilities, and don’t ride recklessly or in a way that could injure you or others. DON’T RIDE IN PARKS. Scooters are prohibited in Portland Parks (including the Springwater Corridor Trail). DON’T RIDE UNDER THE INFLUENCE. Riding a scooter while under the influence of intoxicants is illegal and may result in a DUII. DON’T BRING SCOOTERS ON PUBLIC TRANSIT. Scooters are not allowed on buses, MAX Light Rail, or Portland Streetcar.

Sweet Treats

For years, Kim Malek was dreaming about the creation of a community gathering place. One where you could run into neighbors, spend time with family, or treat yourself. A great neighborhood place. The answer was clearly an ice cream shop. Enter Tyler, her cousin who wanted in. But there was a catch: Neither had ever made ice cream before. Luckily, Tyler wasn’t afraid of his rookie status. He spent $16 on four used ice cream makers and got to work, spending hours endlessly testing flavor ideas in his own personal Wonka-verse (a.k.a., Kim’s basement). Meanwhile, Kim cashed in her savings and bought a cart. And then the two of them turned to their community, asking friends—chefs, chocolatiers, brewers, and farmers—for advice, finding inspiration everywhere they looked. And that’s how Salt & Straw came to be. Our ice cream gives you a moment of happiness and connection to the community around you. If you ever stop believing in magic, eat some ice cream.

Old friends and entertainment-oriented Portlanders Kenneth “Cat Daddy” Pogson and Tres Shannon collaborated on the creation of Voodoo Doughnut. They shared a desire to fuse exceptional hospitality with their bold, do-it-yourself approach to show business and decided to pursue a joint entrepreneurial venture in 2000. Upon conducting research, they discovered that downtown Portland lacked a doughnut shop. As a result, they rented a small storefront situated between two nightclubs in Old Town in 2003. They joked about their ambition to achieve “world doughnut domination” with friends and family and opened Voodoo Doughnut. Initially, their pastry offerings were a combination of traditional and unconventional flavors. The diverse array of sideshow activities included hosting legal weddings, loft concerts above Voodoo’s duct tape-adorned bathroom, and weekly Swahili lessons. Within a month of its inauguration, Voodoo Doughnut garnered its first mention in national media coverage. Since then, Voodoo Doughnut has been featured in a variety of outlets, including The Travel Channel, The Cooking Channel, MTV, Good Morning America, The Today Show, The Tonight Show, Wheel of Fortune, Portlandia, Grimm, Leverage, The Amazing Race, and Access Hollywood. In addition, it has been spotlighted in print publications like People, Playboy, Conde Nast, Spin, GQ, Jane, Maxim, and Food & Wine, among others. Following the opening of its second location in 2008, Voodoo Doughnut now operates 17 locations across six states as of 2023, with its most recent (and second) location in Austin, Texas on historic Burnet Road. The stores frequently have queues that stretch not only out the door but also around the block. Voodoo Doughnut’s clients and fans attribute the company’s success to its development of imaginative and distinctive doughnut flavors and products, and they frequently request that a Voodoo Doughnut store open in their neighborhood. In response to customer demand, the company aims to expand its product line and geographical footprint by opening new locations throughout the U.S. In 2017, Voodoo Doughnut welcomed Chris Schultz as the company’s CEO. Chris has three decades of experience in the restaurant industry, specializing in operational excellence and store growth. He most recently held the position of Senior Vice President of Operations for MOD Pizza, where he led the company’s expansion from a single location to over 350 outlets. With Chris’s strong dedication to employees and customer satisfaction, Voodoo Doughnut is well-prepared to broaden its product line and geographic reach. This will allow the company to introduce its innovative doughnuts, foster an enthusiastic employee culture, and promote community engagement in your neighborhood.

This hip, casual coffee cafe specializes in fried-to-order mini-donuts, chai & espresso drinks. Pip's Original Doughnuts & Chai Family-owned and operated since 2013. We are the world's first doughnut and chai shop. Creators of the first Raw Honey Latte and the Raw Honey & Sea Salt Doughnut. Pip’s Original Owners Launch Community Chai, Bottled Chai Concentrate, Amid COVID-19 Crisis, 10% Profits To Support Service Industry Since 2013, Northeast Portland’s Pip’s Original Doughnuts & Chai has been synonymous with community and cozy comfort. Now the Pip’s team brings that same spirit to local homes with Community Chai: bottled concentrates of the cafe’s spiced chai blends that fans can make and savor anytime. Married co-owners Nate and Jamie Snell were forced to furlough the entire Pip’s Original staff and shutter the cafe on March 16 after Oregon’s governor mandated no gatherings of over 25 people. Left with no staff and no customers, the Snells went into crisis management mode; landing on a concept to pay the bills long enough to open Pip’s doors again: Community Chai. Armed with a few hundred glass bottles sold to them by the fine folks at Portland Juice Co. the scrappy pair began brewing ultra-concentrated versions of their five flavors of hand-crafted, small-batch chai. When the first bottles of concentrate were announced on social media in late March, the response from Portlanders was swift and overwhelmingly positive. Community Chai sold out almost immediately. Nate and Jamie breathed a huge sigh of relief, energized to keep providing their customers with bottles of “concentrated kindness” at a time when people are feeling increasingly isolated. Post-pandemic, Community Chai now sells bottles of small-batch chai at Pip’s Original at 4759 NE Fremont St. Five long-loved flavors available: toasted coconut-turmeric Heart Of Gold. Chile-spiced Ginger Rogers, cocoa-campfire Smokey Robinson, woodsy vanilla The King And I, herbal-floral Emmylou. Each 16-ounce bottle of concentrate yields 32 ounces or more of chai (dependent on personal taste). Customers can blend the concentrate with their favorite milk, juice, or milk alternative—or even use it to craft their own unique cocktails. “Community Chai was born out of a pure place. Our commitment to this community is now giving back in such a beautiful way,” says Nate. “Gifting people a dozen free birthday doughnuts ended up being the best community-based insurance policy when our actual insurance company denied our claim. Every bottle is a love letter to the community we cherish and the city we adore.” Continuing Pip’s trademark focus on generosity and “paying it forward with integrity,” 10 percent of profits from every batch of Community Chai sold during the height of the pandemic were earmarked for its new service industry donation program, which supports other small, local businesses. Recent recipients include Magna, Kim Jong Grillin’, Jojo PDX, and Matta. Nate sums up the Community Chai experience: “One customer called it ‘social connection in a cup.’ And that’s it. When this crisis is over, what will be important is that there was a paradigm shift; that people started finding beauty in the small things that really matter. Taste creates a memory. Before launching a new company during these challenging times, we first had to answer the question: “Are we creating something that is positive over the long term? And the answer was a resounding “Yes.” That’s what we are trying to do cup by cup.”

Jamaican Cuisine

Jamaican food is not exactly abundant in Portland, but this cozy, casual house-turned-restaurant is all the fun of a beachside barbecue. Inside, hand-painted murals line the walls; outside, listen for the sizzle of the restaurant’s knockout jerk chicken, a true crime to miss. Only vegans can get away with swapping for the jerk tofu — and with a pile of plantains, everyone is happy. I frequent this Jamaican restaurant and each time it is delicious, I personally recommend it! Located in North Portland only!

Haitian Cuisine

Haitian cuisine meets Pacific Northwest bounty at Kann, a live-fire restaurant from James Beard Award-winning chef Gregory Gourdet. The restaurant honors his heritage and culture while also honoring the seasons and local ingredients of Oregon. The name Kann ("cane" in Haitian Creole) is a tribute to one of Chef Gregory’s favorite childhood memories in Haiti, where he'd listen for sugar cane vendors to come by with wheelbarrows overflowing with the freshly-harvested snack. Barbecue originated in Haiti and that spirit of open-fire cooking helps anchor the cuisine at Kann. THIS PLACE IS AMAZING!

Haitian-Creole for “Basement,” Sousòl is a subterranean, pan-Caribbean bar from James Beard Foundation award-winning chef Gregory Gourdet. Situated underneath Kann, Sousòl is driven by a vision to share, celebrate, and foster an appreciation of pan-Caribbean flavors, methods, and ingredients with grace and culture. Sousòl will serve drinks and dishes inspired by the cuisines of Haiti, Cuba, The Dominican Republic, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, Mexico, and more, along with the influences of those who migrated to those countries. At Sousòl, we’re determined to create an inclusive imbibing and dining experience for all guests - including those who opt not to drink alcohol for any reason. Chef Gregory Gourdet, who identifies as sober himself, set out to develop thoughtful Zero-Proof and Non-Alcoholic drinks with just as much intention as our full-spirit offerings. Pan-Caribbean bar food that leans into nostalgic Haitian flavors from Chef’s upbringing will complete the experience.

Mexican Cuisine

Got A Hangover? This is your cure! Calling all burrito junkies! This is my favorite Mexican dive in town where the Carne Asada Burrito is King! It's a small locally owned Mexican restaurant with walk-up-to-the-counter ordering. Nothing pretentious, it has half a dozen tables and lots of choices for your burrito. It's hands down, the best burrito I've ever had in Portland, and big enough to be a meal. Friendly service and a clean restaurant, make this one of my go-to's.
