Parks & Nature

We walk to Ibirapuera every other Sunday. It is a 4km walk, but it's quite flat, via a lovely neighbourhood - a really nice walk if you're into urban tracks. Otherwise, there are plenty of buses going from just behind the flat right up to the entrance of the park, and a very cheap Uber ride too. Not to be missed particularly of you want to visit the MAM (Modern Art Museum) or the Bienal if in season.

Small, not absurdly friendly, not fancy at all; but they have a good stock of basic groceries - really handy. Open from 7:00 to 20:00 on weekdays; from 7:00 to 17:00 on Saturdays; closed Sundays.

This is one place we hope you don't need to go; but if you do need a hospital, go to Hospital das Clínicas. It is one of the best, if not the best, hospitals in Brazil (or maybe, really: in South America); it's also a public (i.e. free of charge) hospital. No fancy place; but absolutely guaranteed clinical excellence. Website: http://www.hc.fm.usp.br ***NOTE: Please remember: in Brazil, foreign visitors and tourists are *legally entitled* to (free) public health emergency services; don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

This is a small family business; the food is simple and very tasty, and as cheap as you can find near here. Really a winner when you are out of time. Open for lunch only.

If you are in a state of utter despair, we recommend McDonald's just behind the flat across the big avenue - simply because it's a 24-hour fixture. Big Macs, fries and huge coca-colas at 3am.

Z-Deli has been voted the best hamburger place in São Paulo for the last 3 years, and it's 96 meters away form the flat. Be sure to check their 'Batatas rústicas', or chips with rosemary. The only drawback here is, the long, loooong waiting lines of people at the door. Again, maybe do take advantage of being a local and arrive just as they open (12am; just in time for true burger lovers). Definitely worth a stop.

If you like sushi and Japanese food in general, and if you have a more flexible budget, don't miss Hideki Sushi. The buffet on weekends and lunchtime weekdays is plentiful and delicious. The only real drawback of this place is the price, though. (website: http://www.hidekisushi.com.br)

They have ice-cold beer & typical cheap Brazilian food at all times; plus awful live music in the evenings - what's not to like? Go there only of you don't mind seeing how the real locals like to live - this is no fancy tourist attraction. But the prices are honest and the food is good. Extra bonus: go on a Saturday lunch-hour to enjoy a cheap, carefree 'feijoada' under the scorching sun on the sidewalk.

Fresh home-made ice-cream at a 5 minute walk... oh dear... if you are on a diet (like me) I'd say don't even walk past this door, because the smell of the praliné they make every day is just irresistible.... Website: www.fridaemina.com.br

Typical north-eastern Brazilian cuisine, excellent and at very good value, with music and dance (forró) on Saturdays.... Really a good option if you want to try the north-eastern style while in São Paulo (try any 'Baião de Dois'; and if you are lucky and they have 'Purê de Mandioca' when you go (it's unpredictable) - don't miss it for anything in this world.

Lovely lovely homemade pasta and sauces. You can sit at the outside 'bar' for a simple lunch, but the best option really is to buy the fresh pasta, bring home, and cook yourself.....
