Food scene

Hugely popular with great food, reasonable prices, huge menu, lots of seafood as well as veggie and meat. World famous fish & chips although I prefer their other seafood. Beat the massive queue and book a table. Fish & chip takeaway also available

This is my friends, Cecily and Pete's, new restaurant in Goathland, about 20 minutes drive outside Whitby. Pete used to be the chef at the Pheasant in Harome and is fantastic. Local produce used wherever possible and the food is the best I've had in years. Quite pricey but everything is perfection, lunch menu is cheaper and just as delicious. Booking advised.

Gorgeous tea garden next to local beauty spot Falling Foss waterfall within the woods outside Whitby, about 10 minutes drive. Lovely walks in the woods up to Maybeck, (about 1 hour there and back) or up to the Hermitage, an amazing room carved from a huge boulder. Sandwiches, soup, cakes etc. All outdoors with some tables under cover. Open Easter-October, parking at the top of the hill, 5 minutes walk down. Very busy in the season so it's often easier to park at Maybeck and walk.

Lovely cafe with interesting menu and lots of comfortable, sheltered outdoor seating as well as indoor. It's in the Northcliffe caravan park half way between Whitby and Robin Hoods Bay, so is a good stop off if you're on the Cinder track, or just want to get out of town, look out for the turn off just past High Hawsker. Its open to everyone and has lots of parking.

Fab family run cafe with friendly service and great food. Simple menu with soups, paninis and fabulous cakes. All homemade. It's quite small so often fills up at lunchtimes, dog friendly. Recently changed hands. Closed Monday, Tuesday

Bothams is a Whitby institution, local family run bakery making bread and gorgeous cakes including the fabulous Lemon Buns. Most Whitby residents have a favourite Bothams cake (I've got several!) They have a cafe and shop on Baxtergate but the one on Skinner Street is the best one, the cafe is upstairs and is delightfully old fashioned and lovely. Sandwiches, afternoon tea, meals and cakes.

This place is fantastic for takeaway! I'd walked past it loads of times and it doesn't look anything from the outside. We were just passing at teatime one day and decided to try it, I'm so glad we did! They don't have a huge choice but it's gorgeous, proper food freshly made, not takeaway rubbish that leaves you feeling ugh. Turn right out of the alleyway and cross Church St into Grape Lane and it's just a couple of doors down. Try it!

Lovely little place on Church Street near the turning circle, nice selection of pies, including veggie, with mash, peas and gravy. All served on tin plates in nostalgic decor. Open daytime and evenings for a slap up lunch or tea! Large portions.

Great Pizza place up on the west cliff by the paddling pool. Owned by Dave Ellis who used to run the Moon and Sixpence and the Marine in town. Popular and fancier than your usual pizza place!

Great place, popular with locals and visitors. They make their own beer and pizzas which are excellent. Loads of outdoor seating with a rustic kinda vibe. Often have live music on a weekend. Opposite Whitby Abbey, go up 199 steps and past the church and Abbey entrance, follow the road round, or go through Abbey Headland car park and follow the round out the top to the left. Open 11- 9pm every day.

Sightseeing

Places to visit
Beautiful fishing village 10 minutes drive outside Whitby with quaint little streets and cottages. Various pubs and cafes, 2 fish & chip shops, fabulous beach and scar. Parking is difficult in the season as the larger visitor car park often fills up. I'd recommend parking in Fylingthorpe if possible where you can walk across the fields and end up near the beach in about 20 minutes. Or catch the x93 bus, every half hour in the season from Whitby bus station. No vehicle access to the bottom of the village, all parking and the bus stop at the top of the (steep) hill. To walk back up try the sea wall footpath, it's not so steep and has seating and a picnic area with tables, look for the sign opposite the Dolphin hotel. Loos in the big car park on station road, free for now, also at the top of the bank by the play park and in the Dock, both 40p.

Lovely fishing village about 20 minutes drive north of Whitby. Similar to Robin Hoods Bay on the face of it with the old fishing village down by the sea with winding lanes and yards and the newer village and car park at the top of the bank but a very different feel to it. Small beach and harbour with piers, a few cafes, pubs and shops. Toilets in the car park and by the beach.

This place is fabulous, it's one of the smallest pubs in the UK and has 2 tiny bars, and a tiny sweet shop. It also has a garden by the river with quite a few tables. They serve sandwiches, cheese or ham, and scones, tea and coffee as well as beer etc. Beck Hole is a tiny hamlet near Goathland and there is a nice walk between the two on the old railway incline or through the woods to the Mallyan Spout waterfall. There is also a wheelchair/buggy accessible walk between here and Grosmont engine shed along the riverside with a steep section at the end into Grosmont village.

Lovely village centred around the train station, which was used in the first Harry Potter film, steam trains here go to Pickering along the Esk Valley heritage line and sometimes Whitby in the season. There is a big car park by the station and another in the old brickworks. A few shops, mainly train themed ! Nice cafe in the station and another in the old school which is over the footbridge on the footpath to Beck Hole.

Beautiful village spread out across the moors, plenty of sheep wandering about. This is where Heartbeat was filmed and there are quite a few tourists visiting the garage and pub from the TV programme but venture away from there and it's usually very quiet. Steam train station, shops, couple of cafes, restaurants and pubs. Lovely walk down to Beck Hole and also to the Mallyan Spout waterfall at the far end of the village between the Mallyan Spout hotel and The Homestead.

Walks

The Cleveland Way between Robin Hoods Bay and Whitby is very popular, it's about 6 miles of coastal footpath along the cliffs. The full route runs from Helmsley to Filey with the coastal portion between Saltburn and Filey.. The path in Whitby starts up behind the Abbey, if you go out the opposite end of the car park and turn left you'll see the signpost. It's not too challenging but does have quite a lot of up and down! Obviously keep away from the cliff edge, you'd be surprised how many people walk right to the edge of the cliff not realising how dangerous this is, cliff edges are not stable! The next section is from RHB to Ravenscar then Ravenscar to Scarborough. You can also walk back along the Cinder Track which is much easier going and runs between Whitby and Scarborough, see separate section. There is also a bus back every half hour in the season and hour otherwise, x93 but it's pricey, £8.50 each.

Fabulous path for cycling and walking on the old trackbed between Whitby and Scarborough. The Whitby end has recently been resurfaced and is great, it's a bit rougher between there and the resurfaced section toward Robin Hoods Bay so can get muddy but easily accessible for everyone and pretty level walking. It's very well used by cyclists, walkers, dog, buggies, kids etc but gets quieter the further from Whitby you get. Access from Southend Gardens near Beevers furniture shop. Comes out on Mount Pleasant North in RHB and can be easily combined with the Cleveland way on any section, between Whitby and RHB, RHB and Ravenscar and Ravenscar and Scarborough. The surface is not so good past RHB but fine for walking and mountain bikes.

Walks

Maybeck and Falling Foss are linked by a couple of paths on either side of the beck through the woods. It's about a half hour walk between the two, in the season I'd recommend parking at Maybeck as it's got a bigger car park , Falling Foss car park gets really busy because of the tea garden so it's easier to park here and walk down if you want to go to the cafe. There's also loads of footpaths from Maybeck in the opposite direction, up the forestry tracks, good when it's muddy, or up through the woods above the beck, (follow the steps that lead up from the opposite side of the bridge from the car park) all well marked and easy to find, mostly circular, 1 hour or so.
