Sightseeing

City Hall is a great starting point for all visitors coming to Belfast. Conveniently located in the heart of the city, it is the focal point that will help you navigate around the city. Donegall Square is the pick up / drop off point for all the pink Metro buses operate that operate around the City. Constructed between 1898 and 1906 and designed by Sir Alfred Brumwell Thomas, the City Hall is a stunning example of Baroque Revival architecture. The inside of City Hall is equally as beautiful as the outside. The interiors are adorned with beautiful Italian marble and exquisite plaster detail. There are beautiful stained glass windows, paintings and statues to marvel at. On the ground floor is a 16 room visitor exhibition that is free to view. It’s a good starting point for all visitors to the city as it gives an overview of the history of the city, it’s people and industrial heritage. Keep a look out for room 4 and you will see on display a beautiful sideboard that was destined for the Captain's dining room of Titanic. It wasn't finished on time so never made it on board the ship before it's fateful 1912 voyage. Another must is the guided tour of the building. The tour is around 45 minutes long and gives a historical overview of the building. It also includes access to the upstairs rooms including the Council Chamber, Rotunda and Banqueting Hall and Great Hall. The guided tour is free of charge.

Titanic Belfast is a visitor attraction opened in 2012 - the centenary to the sinking of Titanic. The building is a monument to Belfast's maritime heritage on the site of the former Harland & Wolff shipyard in the city's Titanic Quarter where the RMS Titanic was built. The visitor experience tells the stories of Belfast's industrial ship building heritage and the stories of the Titanic, which hit an iceberg and sank during her maiden voyage in 1912. The building itself is architecturally stunning. Each of the three peaks represents the bow of the 3 sister ships built by Harland & Wolff - Titanic, Olympic and Britannic. During the busy summer season, the Visitor Experience can be very busy. I would always recommend booking your visit online prior to your visit.

The Crumlin Road Gaol is a 19th century Grade A listed jail, open to the public for tours, concerts and events. Take a tour to experience all aspects of the Gaol from the tunnel linking the courthouse on the other side of the Crumlin Road to the hanging cell, Governor's office, hospital and graveyard. Guided tours take place daily. Crumlin Road Gaol first opened its gates to prisoners in 1846 and for 150 years was a fully operational prison. On March 31, 1996, the Governor of Belfast's Crumlin Road Gaol walked out of the fortified prison and the heavy air-lock gates slammed shut for the final time. During those 150 years the Gaol has housed murderers, suffragettes and loyalist and republican prisoners. It has witnessed births, deaths and marriages and has been the home to executions, escapes, hunger-strikes and riots.

Queen's University Belfast is one of the leading universities in the UK and Ireland with a distinguished heritage and history. The University is a member of the Russell Group of UK research intensive universities, combining excellence in research and education with a student-centred ethos. Queen’s University Belfast was founded by Royal Charter in 1845. Founded by Queen Victoria, the Queen's University in Ireland, was designed to be a non-denominational alternative to Trinity College Dublin which was controlled by the Anglican Church. The University was made up of three Queen's Colleges - in Cork, Galway and Belfast. Although it was the first University in the north of Ireland, Queen's drew on a tradition of learning which goes back to 1810 and the foundation of the Belfast Academical Institution. The magnificent main building was designed in 1849 by Sir Charles Lanyon. He was also responsible for designing other Belfast landmarks such as Belfast Castle, Crumlin Road Gaol and the Customs House. Since then, the University estate has grown to more than 300 buildings - many of them listed for their architectural importance. The building is a marvel to look at. Walk through the front door and to the right is a visitor centre and shop. Further on through is the quadrangle where the graduation celebrations take place - including my own in 2006!
