Glastonbury Tor is a prominent hill next to the town of Glastonbury. Above the wooded lower parts, it is treeless and topped by a ruined tower of St.Michael's church. It has been associated with Avalon of Arthurian legends and partly due to this the Tor and the town have become a spiritual and new-age centre. The tor is easily reached by a short walk from the town centre or car parks.
Loved the experience of climbing to the top of this beautiful hill; a great place for contemplation. The Tor itself is small, as ruin remnants go, but achieving this challenging climb made it all well worth a visit. You’ll be rewarded with spectacular 360 views, as far as the eye can see! Climbing the Tor is free, and can be accessed through two routes; one shorter than the other, but equally challenging. I highly recommend very comfortable shoes and warm clothing, as it can get pretty cold on the way. Gale winds were extraordinarily strong the day I climbed, but it was doable, being very careful; check the weather before you go. There are no bathroom facilities on the way, or at the top. The uphill trail is well maintained, but lacks guardrails, even on some steep areas of the hill. I saw plenty people with their dogs and even a small child, though I personally would not recommend it. Use your judgment on how fit and prepare you might be, to tackle this climb; ultimately I think It’s really worth it.
