Enjoy Turn of the Century decor in this historic restaurant. Established in 1899, you'll enjoy a home style menu – famous prime rib, steaks, chicken and pasta dishes, daily specials, homemade pizza, and a soup and salad bar. The sit-down restaurant area and pub area are separated, so you can easily take your young family members to dinner and not be in a bar atmosphere. The pub first opened in 1899, and when prohibition kicked in in 1920, the original owner, Tom Nelson got a pharmaceutical license so he could legally sell bitters as a "stomach tincture." At 90 proof, it takes a lot of courage to down a shot of Angostura bitters, but once you do, you become a member of the "Bitters Club," making you a "full-fledged islander." Nelsen's is the oldest continuously-operating tavern in Wisconsin. Address: 1201 Main Rd, Washington, WI 54246 Phone: (920) 847-2496 Open 11:30am. Accepts all major credit cards.

The town began construction for the Lookout Tower in 1968, and, without room for a crane or electricity lines, builders carried the logs for the tower on their shoulders. But town residents didn’t stop with just a tower. In 1989, a group of volunteers built a staircase leading up the steep hill to the base of the tower, clocking in a total of 186 steps. Climb those steps (there are resting benches along the way) for a look out over the northeast corner of Washington Island and see Rock Island State Park in the distance and the beginning of the Grand Traverse Islands, which stretches all the way up to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It's one of my favorite places on the island. A must-see for nature lovers! Address: 1403 Mountain Rd, Washington, WI 54246
