Cramond is a small village on the shoreline of the Firth of Forth. It has a small beach. There is a pub and views There is a small island, Cramond Island, which is accessible via a causeway for only some hours of the day. It is very important to check the tide times before you cross to the island, they are posted on noticeboards by the causeway, and to wear suitable clothing. If you miss the time window for the tides to cross to the island, do not be sad, as there are many lovely walks inland along the River Almond.

Calton hill is part of the World Heritage site and is beyond the east end of Princes Street. It is the perfect place for photography of views over the whole city and has often been used by painters to capture the city. The Scottish Parliament (an amazing modern building) and Holyrood Palace lie at the foot of the hill. On the hill are the National Monument, the Nelson Monument, the Robert Burns Monument and the City Observatory.

Stockbridge is to Edinburgh what Hampstead is to London. Well to do, interesting architecture, trendy with lots of small independent shops, along with the river running through it. You can reach it via a pleasant walk through the Georgian New Town.

Edinburgh is a unique city, small and hilly, and that produced a medieval burgh in which houses were built from local stone, up and up, because the city could not easily spread outwards due to topography and the marshy Nor Loch (which was where Princes Street Gardens are now). It also made it defensible, enclosed within city walls. When the decision was made to drain the Nor Loch and open up the city to the north, building a grand New Town in Georgian times, it was done because building collapses and disease outbreaks had made the Old Town Edinburgh’s shame. The speed of adoption of the light and airy New Town allowed the Old Town to mostly survive, left to the poor and light industry and commerce. Some areas of the Old Town have been lost since that time, but most remains intact, an amazing World Heritage Site. Ironically, the New Town itself has also been granted World Heritage status, making Edinburgh almost unique in this dual accolade. The Old Town is made up of medieval street patterns and sandstone and granite buildings, built sometimes six or seven storeys high. Most of these buildings were always multi occupancy and some were very overcrowded. A feature of the Old Town is the “Closes”, pedestrian alleyways and tunnels that pepper the Royal Mile, some of themcut-throughs to roads, others ending in courtyards or gardens. Not all are accessible, as they were generally private, but many can be explored.

Determined to leave the ramshackle and claustrophobic Old Town behind, a new Georgian city was planned and constructed to the north of the drained Nor Loch (now Princes Street Gardens). Wide streets, squares and crescents, elegant Georgian architecture with huge windows and grand entrances were constructed, and the properties were immediately popular with the well to do. Today, this World Heritage site allows for lovely city walks, as well as being an ideal route to walk from the City Centre to the Botanic Gardens.

Portobello or Porty for short, is Edinburgh’s seaside. It is quirky and busy and great fun. The cafes on the seafront are good though a little expensive - but you get the view! For a cheaper option, the High Street, one block back has many good value options. Get here by bus from the centre of town. Bring a bucket and spade!
