A fantastic day out for all ages. Cheddar Gorge offers lots of different experiences including open top bus tours, visits down three different caves, sampling Cheddar Cheese during a factory visit, watching home made sweets being made and don’t forget to enjoy a traditional cream tea from one of the local tea rooms. A drive up and down the gorge will show a fascinating view through history. There are several parking areas throughout the Gorge so you can take a walk and explore the area or watch the local goats on the steep sides of the Gorge. There are local souvenir shops and a couple of pubs, take always and restaurants at the bottom of the Gorge. For the best knowledge and value for money it is worth booking the bus tour and cave visits. The Gorge comes alive from around 10am every day and can get very busy during holiday season. Take money for car parking.

Glastonbury is one of the most famous landmarks in Somerset due to the Glastonbury Tor and of course the world famous music festival. The town offers an eclectic mix of shopping and healing experiences. There are lots of interesting fairs put on in the local hall. Near the centre of the village you can visit Glastonbury Abbey and learn about the legend of King Arthur who is reportedly buried there or walk up to the top of Glastonbury Tor for the best views in the area. A lot of people visit the area for Summer and Winter solstice and for the Glastonbury Festival set in Pilton- a few miles down the road.

Axbridge is a small town situated between Cheddar and Rooksbridge. It is the home of the medieval King John's Hunting Lodge which is now a small museum situated on the corner of the town square. There are three car parks in and around the town square and visitors can walk around the square, the high street with several old buildings, now homes or shops, visit the church or have something to eat at the local pubs and tea rooms. On the roads towards Cheddar in the summer there are vendors selling Cheddar Strawberries - you will not find a better fruit!

Wells in Somerset is the smallest City in the country. A must see visit is the stunning Wells Cathedral. Try to organise being near the interior clock at the top of every hour for a fun display of jousting by two metal riders. The cathedral is great to explore and you can enjoy a picnic on Cathedral Green overlooking the historic building. Tours are provided in the Cathedral on occasions and there are often choirs or musical practise as well. The city also has the Bishops Palace with gardens and a moat. You can often see the trained swans who ring a bell on the moat wall for their food. On Wednesdays and Saturdays there is a market in the main square and there are plenty of shops and places to eat along the main streets. There is a museum near the Cathedral which has a lot of local history, especially about caving and local knowledge. There are also a couple of super markets in Wells for food shopping.

Walks and Wildlife

Wildlife or walking places to visit in the area
A great walk around a local reservoir with views of Axbridge Hill, Axbridge Moorland, Cheddar hills and out towards Nyland and Glastonbury. Dogs are welcome on this walking area and there is a good amount of tarmac surfacing for children riding bikes or scooters. On the Cheddar side of the reservoir there is a scooter park and there is a good amount of parking on both the Cheddar and Axbridge entrances. While you walk you may also see windsurfers or boats on the water from the local sailing club. There is normally a good amount of bird life on the water so good for bird watching.

One of the best walks in the area is Brent Knoll. This is a high hill that can be seen from a lot of places in the area. There are a couple of paths you can take up the Knoll and once you reach the top you will get the most amazing panoramic views of the area. This is a great family or group walk and there is a dip in the centre of the Knoll which is perfect for picnics out of the possible wind.

The Somerset Levels boast a huge variety of Wildlife treasures. The wetlands areas are split into several Nature reserves including Westhay, High Ham, Ham Wall and Shapwick. These reserves can be accessed for walks around the stunning area and visits to bird hides for peaceful wildlife and bird watching. A few reserves will allow dogs and bicycle rides but you should check in the RSPB website before accessing. The reserves are well maintained and have several information boards showing the type of wildlife you can see. During late November to early January the reserves are famed for Starling murmurations and are a must see at Dawn or Dusk if you are in the area. The Avalon Marshes Centre has a great art gallery, historic building and tea room facilities.
