Great steak and seafood in an old time feeling open seating restaurant. It is in the corner of the downtown 5th Avenue Mall (convenient) but does not feel like you are in the mall. Entrance is on C street side of the mall and is separate from the mall. There is also bar seating with bar bites or full menu options as well. Occasional live music. Wonderful glacier boat tours with Chugach park ranger guides. Weather can be very iffy...glorious to awful. Recommend Phillips 27 Glacier Cruise. You can combine this with a train ride there on Alaska railroad or drive there yourself. It is about an hour and a half drive to Whittier and there are very specific times the tunnel opens for travel in and out of Whittier. Be aware that the ‘meal’ included is chowder, chips, a drink and a candy

Fabulous presentations by Jeff King, a four time Iditarod winner, and his staff. Watch the dogs in their training routines, learn about how the dogs are raised and chosen for competitive racing. Great stories about mushing and what it is really about for both the mushers and their dogs. Cuddle new puppies to help socialize them. I am pretty jaded about these types of sightseeing shows and I have been to it 3 times already!

Take the train or drive to Denali. Visit the park over 2-3 days. Don't take the bus and if you take the train you don't need to buy the expensive upper deck seats as every seat has spectacular views and you can walk all over the train. The regular park bus is good for riding into the park. You can get on and off at a lot of locations, stay later or head back earlier. The park bus drivers can be good guides too. We saw a lynx as we were entering the park! The fancy tour buses are probably fine and may afford more amenities, but it is a LONG ride all the way into and out of the park which I believe the tour buses do. Go the full 89 miles into the park, stop 66 miles in at Eielson Visitor Center, hop off the bus at a trailhead and hike or just walk around the park entry and visit the Denali Park Visitor Center. Go to Husky Homestead Sled Dog Show in the evening or on an off day.

Getting around Anchorage and nearby destinations

You can walk many great places from our BnB apartment. You can also drive, take Uber/Lyft/taxis within the city. Bicycle day rentals are available near by. If you want to explore outside the city, you can take trains, limited buses (unless it is part of a tour) and scenic flights.

Wildlife Safety

There are moose on the streets of Anchorage and moose and bears on Anchorage and other park trails. Stay a long ways away from moose, especially young ones with mother’s nearby. Moose are dangerous. When hiking, get familiar with protection protocols for wildlife encounters. Whistles, bear bells and bear spray are things to consider.
