A historic funky old mining town about 15 miles from Santa Fe. Take scenic byway 14 to get there and consider stopping in the dusty western town of Cerrillos along the way. In Madrid there are numberous galleries, shops, eateries and The Mine Shaft Tavern which houses a museum and historic theatre on the premises as well as being a locals favorite place for drinks, a meal and live music.

Great old hotel on the plaza. A great place to check out if only to stop in and use the bathroom. The hotel has a good restaurant and two bars. The indoor one often has some very good local bands. The rooftop bar/restaurant offers a great view of the city at sunset. Drinks are little pricier here but well worth it.

Sightseeing

Beautiful adobe architecture along a lovely historic street with great views of the east mountains loaded with art galleries, bars, restaurants and other points of interest. Early Friday evenings are a great time for art openings before or after dinner. El Farol Restaurant also has good bands and dancing several on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. This is a favorite hangout for locals. The Tea House is another terrific place to stop in for a wide variety of teas or light and delicious food. On a chilly day it's fun to sit in front of the fireplace with chai and warm up. Housed in a very cozy historic adobe building.
