Nature Walks

The Nature Reserve at Brackenholme’s End - ‘The Warren’* The nature reserve is a designated SSSI, the highest protection that can be awarded to land on the British Isles. It stands for Site of Special Scientific Interest. ‘The Warren’ has an exceptionally unique and fragile biome. Believed to have been the river bed of the river Humber 1000s of years ago, it is home to a micro-biome. If you look very closely at the earth you will see that it is mostly sand and has miniature plants growing on it, mosses and Orquídea no bigger than your fingernail. Please remember that dogs must always be on the lead, and that it is an offense to litter on the Warren. This includes dog mess, natural food skins and even cigarette butts. Please make sure you take everything with you to protect this fragile natural environment. There is a herd of wild exmoor ponies roaming on this land, maintaining grass levels. They enjoy relaxing under Pine or silver birch coppice’s when it’s hot. We recommend following any fresh horse excrement you can see on the ground to track them. If you are able to track them across the 400 acres, please remember that these ponies are not domesticated, do not feed them, and to keep a safe distance from them. They are beautiful but can be unpredictable. The Warren also has beautiful sand dunes in the middle of it, you can spot these on Google Earth. They are a particular favorite with small children! Directions from Sawcliffe Farm - Drive 2 mins to Brackenholme’s End, it is much safer as people speed on the road connecting Sawcliffe Farm to the reserve. https://goo.gl/maps/hztBMVJuG4RRAWz87 - Park the car. - Walk past the field gate and bare right along the fence. 2 min walk. - Walk until you get to another field gate which is locked next to a sign about dogs. - The bare left along a path which is flanked by two fences. - Walk along this path for 10-15 mins as it skirts around the nature reserve. - Eventually you will find a metal ‘kissing gate’ on your right. This is the entrance to the Nature Reserve.
