17th century Stadholder Maurits made his fortune in Brazil and built his city-palace neighbouring the Binnenhof. The museum now harbours an undisputed world-famous collection 17th century Dutch paintings to be enjoyed in a contemporary backdrop. The list of must-see paintings is too big and best to be discovered in the museum. Visitors really into museums can opt to purchase a museumkaart at the counter. It'll set you back 65,- but you get free access to almost all Dutch museums, for 1 year. It's for Dutchies so there are some rules. If you're interested, I will help you to get the museumkaart.

The Hague always has attracted painters because of the crisp and intense light. The so-called Haagse School introduced many famous painters to the world, one of them Hendrik Willem Mesdag who created this 120 meter long panoramic painting of the Scheveningen coastline in 1881. Its one of the very few remaining panoramic paintings in the world.

beaches

The Hague is the only Dutch city built behind the dunes. From my place it's 15 mins on a bike, the same for a car. The tramline 12 stops close to my house and it'll take 10 mins to get to the dunes and sea. Always take some coins as the vending machines in the tram could have trouble reading credit cards - and ( we're in Holland) accept only Dutch cards. Be prepared to walk for a couple of hours along the beach - the space is mesmerizing. The Dutch have this unique untranslatable word, 'uitwaaien', which is letting the wind take your thoughts and worries, much like moisture from a piece of cloth hung out to dry.

Much busier than Westduin beach ( which is a nature reserve) , Scheveningen beach and boulevard are designed for the many. On the beach itself there are some very nice places. Tramline 11 from Weimarstraat ( 5 mins walk) will take you there. ( and to the Haagse Markt in opposite direction). For food check the harbour area. Simonis is the best known fish restaurant.

markets

The Lange Voorhout is a stately avenue in the center, aligned with historical city palaces. Any day is a good day to stroll around. From mid May to mid September there is an antique / bookmarket every thursday and sunday from 10 to 18. Between mid September and mid May only thursday from 10-18. Have a drink in the Posthoorn café or visit the M.C. Escher Museum situated in Regentesse Emma's winterpalace. Mauritshuis, Binnenhof and Paleis Noordeinde all around the corner.

De Haagse Markt is the largest market in the Netherlands and attracts around 30.000 visitors per day. No nationality excluded. You go with the flow, enjoy the sounds, smells and colours and get good deals on almost anything. The market is open monday, wednesday, friday and saturday, from 09:00 to 17:00. From my place it's a 15 min walk, or with tram 12, 8 mins. Many vendors only accept cash and the ATM's around the market can have long queues.

places to eat

Small, cheap, Indonesian-Surinam restaurant & take-away. Local facvourite. Van Bylandtstraat 91.
There are many Indonesian restaurants in The Hague and as a rule, all are good. There is a big Indonesia-rooted community ( due to the Dutch colonial past). If your kitchen isn't good, no-one will come. Location, price and specialities are the markers. Bogor is very close to my place and really excellent. Always packed. When in doubt you can always order a so-called rijsttafel, a bit of all. Srikandi ( Grote Marktstraat) is another place I visit, more modern, plus they serve an excellent sateh Kambing (goat meat).

areas

Each area starts at the centre ( i.e Binnenhof) with pointers to interesting places around it, all to walk. The airbnb website only accepts a fixed and known location, so I use a central one per area.
The Binnenhof is the oldest parlamentary building still used for its original purpose. The Dutch PM works here, in the so-called 'torentje' - little tower, on the corner next to the Mauritshuis. Soon to be closed for a decennia-long restauration. It is truly the centerpoint of Dutch political history. A must see / walk-through. Next to the Binnenhof you will find the Plein - with many cafés and restaurants. In the afternoons and evenings filled with politicians, staff and everybody else connected to national politics. In the small shopping street, Korte Poten 24, you will find the Wiener Konditorei, a tiny place still the same since the 1930's, with the bakery on the first floor. Just to show that lagging behind our times means you'll be the front runner the following wave. Excellent quality. I am donor to the cause by having the Mohnkuche when I'm there - made of poppy-seed.
