Food Scene

The best restaurant in Madaket - and a favorite of many on island for its family atmosphere, fish tacos, outdoor dining, and sunset views. Get there 30-60 mins before sunset and try for a corner window table upstairs. You'll have spectacular ocean views around the point at sunset. I like a Madaket Mystery (rum punch) , the Tuna poke appetizer, the grilled mexican street corn, and the Hither Creek tacos. http://www.milliesnantucket.com

This is our most famous ice cream place. The thing to try is their fresh-baked waffle cones. Yes, it's pricey. But people still wait in long lines for their cones! You can find shorter lines before 3pm, and when everyone else is at the beach. https://www.facebook.com/juicebarnantucket/

This is a newer restaurant I've been to twice and liked it; they have some locally-inspired and sourced dishes and a nice cozy ambiance, there's a fireplace in winter. Seating can be a bit close together.

If you want an elegant, romantic spot to have cocktails , nice dinner, and see sunset, say something profound to someone special, it's hard to go wrong at Galley Beach. It's costly, out of my range! But you can Uber there and just have a cocktail. Dress nicely. Make reservations. http://www.galleybeach.net/menus.html

Nice for breakfast, kind of a squeeze into the indoor tables, but you can ask for an outside table. It's popular so there may be a bit of a wait. For dinner, this is one of two restaurants in town that allow BYOB. http://black-eyedsusans.com/

Boarding House is one of my favorite places for a nice dinner in town; owned by the Raynors who have been running restaurants here for many years. You can eat outside in the cafe and people-watch on the street, or head underground to the cave-like cozy dining room. You can also eat in the bar area, but it's a bit noisy in there. To get a table, especially in peak season, you need to reserve in advance or get lucky. http://boardinghousenantucket.com/reservations/ After about 11PM, the bar often gets pretty wild, packed with dancing (sometimes on the tables!) and music till closing.

Definitely make a trip out to sconset. See the village of antique cottages, then find the entrance to this path where you can walk along the ocean bluff, through the back yeards of some very nice large houses on the bluff. Just keep in mind that although the path is a public way, the residents do like to imagine they have some privacy.

Parks & Nature

For ocean lovers, sunset lovers, bird-watchers. Protected populations of Piping Plovers, Eastern Oyster Catchers, and Least Terns. Take Ames St to the end, turn left then right; entrance is next to the guard shack. Walk to beach then left along the water as far as you care. Be careful around cordoned areas in season.

Arts & Culture

Whaling Museum is really well put together and gives a sense for Nantucket's history that is accessible to many ages and levels of interest. It may be more crowded on rainy or cloudy days since it's a favorite when the beach is not.
