A fantastic modern Italian that goes to OCD levels for the best result: for their baked goods, these guys even mill their own flour.
Bakery open morning to evening, restaurant open lunch and dinner. Amazing.

If jet lag wakes you up oddly early, why not go see the sun rise over the city from Mount Eden? Takes 40ish minutes to reach the top and is super worth it. Make sure you take photos of the bronze table showing you distances to cities around the world - maybe you can find yours? :-)

Auckland is safe. There are some shady neighbourhoods, but those are down around South Auckland and you won't spend any time there anyway.
All tap water is drinkable.
