We have rafted the Nantahala River many times and used several outfitters. This is one of our favorites. There are some restrictions for rafting the Nantahala. Rafters must be at least 7 yrs old or 60+ lbs. The trip usually takes 3-4 hours. For a list of rafting outfitters just google: “rafting outfitters near Nantahala”. The Nantahala has class 2-3 rapids.

We love tubing and picnicking at Deep Creek near Bryson City which is about 1/2 hour drive from the cabin. You can rent tubes for a day for about $5 from numerous rental stores just outside the park. Entrance to the park is free with picnic tables and grills right near the creek. There is also a campground across the creek. There is a $25/day fee to reserve the pavilion for groups. Check out this link for more info and pictures. https://www.greatsmokies.com/deepcreek-tubing/

Sightseeing

We always enjoy going here with friends and especially with children. It’s so impressive to be able to safely walk behind the Falls and sense the awesome power and beauty. There is also an overlook for those who just don’t want to or can’t walk down the pathway to the falls. There are lots of other falls and rapids on this road with beautiful overlooks. Take Hwy 64 out of Franklin towards Highlands.

Wayah Bald is a high-altitude treeless open area in Nantahala National Forest, near Franklin, North Carolina. The Wayah Bald Observation Tower is located at the area's highest point (5,385 feet); the stone observation tower was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1937 for fire detection. The Appalachian Trail and Bartram Trail cross at Wayah Bald. Wayah Bald is a popular destination for hikers, especially during Spring, when the rhododendron and azaleas are in bloom. We have driven here several times which about a 1 hr from our cabin. The drive along Wayah Rd passes through gorgeous views of streams and mountain cottages. There are picnic tables and bathrooms near the parking area.

Crabtree Falls is an incredible 70-foot waterfall in the heart of Western North Carolina, inside the famed Black Mountains. It’s about a 2 hr 15 minute drive from our cabin but worth the time. Located on the Blount County side of Little River Gorge Road, the parking lot to view the falls is 13 miles from the Sugarlands Visitor Center or 7 miles from Townsend. If you’re coming from the Blount County side, turn left at the Townsend Wye. Be alert, however, the falls are tucked away back from the road and can be missed easily while driving. Therefore, if you are coming from the Townsend side on Little River Road and you reach The Sinks, you’ve gone too far. It’s one of the significant, but underappreciated, waterfalls in the Smokies. The falls are especially impressive after a heavy rain or if there have been several extremely cold days in winter, freezing the falls.

What is the biggest waterfall in the Smoky Mountains? By height, it’s Ramsey Cascades in the Greenbrier where water – well cascades – pour down over 100 feet of rock outcroppings to a small pool that’s home to a variety of salamanders.

From the parking lot, seven miles west of Newfound Gap, walk the steep half-mile path to the 54-foot observation tower for a 360-degree view of the Park. Sunrises and sunsets are spectacular. We have done the train excursion several times. One goes from Bryson City to Dillsboro with a stopover long enough to shop at a host of neat shops including pottery shops and some restaurants. Then returns to Bryson City. The other one goes from Bryson City through the Nantahala Gorge and along the Nantahala Lake and dam and stops over at the Nantahala Outdoor Center where you can eat or picnic or you could combine that excursion with a white water rafting trip. The train then travels back to Bryson City. With price of the excursion, each person gets a free ticket to the train museum where there are multiple working train layouts. There are also special trips like mystery excursions but you would have to check with them by calling or at their website. We have a DVD at the cabin about the railroad and brochures.
