Food scene

This bakery is on the left just as you enter Los Alamos. It’s a must stop for Seamus’s brother when he visits (last time he ate there all three mornings – the third morning he had two breakfasts because he couldn’t decide!). We always pick up a sandwich from the case when we go on road trips (they’re the perfect half way there snack!). Be prepared to wait in line on the weekends, but the result is worth it. Stock up on bread and pastries for later when ordering in. Good for breakfast, brunch or lunch to eat in and pastries, bread or sandwiches to go.

Jesper Johansson and Alec Roehl, of the former Café Quackenbush, know how to make you feel at home. Delicious food and a warm welcome make this our go to lunch spot. Look around and you’ll see lots of locals here. Good for breakfast or lunch with vegan options. Soups are always delicious.

When we moved to Los Alamos over twelve years ago, Flatbread, was one of the only spots in town. Back then this little gem in the rough was only open on weekends, but already had a reputation that spread to our Santa Barbara friends and beyond. Since then they have expanded their hours and their weekend specials are always worth a look. If you can’t decide, our old standby is the Pepperoni and Peppers, add sausage. Wood fired pizzas, including vegan and gluten free options, Sunday suppers (or anything on the specials list), and The Beast for dessert (not on the menu, just ask for it!).

Owners Daisy and Greg are one of the newer restaurant additions to town, taking over the space formerly occupied by the beloved Bell Street Farms. The welcome is always warm and this restaurant is a treat any time of day. For lunch we nibble on Saucisson (goat cheese, salami and magic dust) and then dive into whatever seasonal creations Daisy has to offer. Lunch staples are the French Dip that melts in your mouth, any of the seasonal French Gnocchi dishes, the now legendary egg salad sandwich, and, of course the best snails I've ever had. For dinner, be sure to make reservations ahead of time (online only, they don’t have a phone), and absolutely everything is good. Great wine list and knowledgeable staff. French inspired lunch, dinner or happy hour (limited menu from 3-5 pm).

Located in the historic Los Alamos General Store, Pico (one of Wine Enthusiasts Top 100 Wine Restaurants 2 years in a row) boasts award winning food by Chef Drew, divine cocktails, and a rotating wine list that includes rare “Unicorn Flights”. We always bring first time Los Alamos visitors and order the whole menu family style (or as much as our stomachs will allow). Wine, Beer & Drinks

The rowdiest watering hole in town since the 1880s with a full bar, billiards, burgers and BBQ. The Union is a must visit in Los Alamos, even if it’s just for a drink. You feel like you step back in time when you walk through the door. Play a game of pool, mingle with the locals, have a stiff drink (they make a great whiskey sour), beer or a snack.

Our neighbor, the Bodega, is a little gem right next door from Casa de Terpenos. They serve rare wines from near and far and interesting beers and ciders – something for everyone with a side of chill. This is the best place in town to meet up on a casual day to just hang out. Wine, beer, fire pit and bocce.
