Check out the pig races, teepee climbing wall, the sandbox, slides, and swings. The livestock barn is open year-round to visit their goats, sheep, chickens, ducks, and geese. The big sheep is named Speckles and she will come to her name. No one is ever too old for the Squash Rockets, their massive slingshots that let you fling fruits and vegetables out into their fields! There are also adult things such as the brewery and cafe. It' about 30 minutes by car--with some stunning views of the Bay and the surrounding countryside.

Our kids went to the hatchery at least once a year while they were growing up--and they looked forward to it. You can feed the fish (only with the food pellets available for sale), at the Big Fish Pond and observe them underwater at the Viewing Chamber, walk the nature trail, explore and souvenir hunt at the Visitor Center. Adjacent to the visitor center sits the re-created 1914-1935 Wolverine train car. This historic exhibit depicts how employees of the old Michigan Department of Conservation lived on the train while transporting and stocking fish across the state. Displays include the sleeping berths, a kitchen, and several uniquely designed stewardship messages. The Oden Hatchery Visitor Center, located on the grounds of the Oden State Fish Hatchery, is the site of the original fish hatchery building which began operations in 1921. In 2002, a new hatchery was built one quarter-mile northeast of the current visitor center. Adults and kids find this self-directed tour of the hatchery a fun way to get to know more about the Great Lakes fishery.

The museum is located in one of the original train depots serving the summer resorters seeking relief from the city during the summer months. You'll find this modest museum worth the time as it provides a historical perspective on this area's culture and history. If you're a Hemingway fan, you'll enjoy this section of the museum. Growing up, Ernest Hemingway spent his summers at the family cottage on Walloon Lake, a few miles south of Petoskey. After serving as an ambulance driver in World War I, he returned to Petoskey in the winter of 1919-1920. Several of the Nick Adams stories take place in nearby Horton's Bay, and the satirical The Torrents of Spring is set in downtown Petoskey.

A great local favorite located in Stafford's Perry Hotel. If you've traveled for a living and grimace at the idea of a hotel bar, let us put you at ease. It's a fun hangout with good food and a varied beverage selection, and it's a super fun place for catching some great live music. This place holds fond memories for me. The “Bike Path”, as it is locally called, runs 26 miles from Charlevoix to Harbor Springs in Charlevoix and Emmet Counties. The trail is mostly dedicated and paved in asphalt. It is currently the best developed and most suburban of our trunk line trails. The part between Petoskey’s Bayfront Park to Petoskey State Park follows closely the path of the original Little Traverse Wheelway that stretched from Petoskey to Harbor Springs in the 1880s and ‘90s. A gate over the trail at the east end of Bayfront Park proclaims “No Teaming or Driving,” and replicates the original gate that stood at nearly the same spot. This gate is a reminder of a time when people were prohibited from riding horses or horse-drawn carriages on the trail. Two other identical gates have been built to the west on Petoskey’s portion of the trail. You'll find several access points with parking and bike rentals on or near the trail.

Experience one of Petoskey's best-kept secrets - one of the Midwest's best whitewater recreation areas right in the heart of Petoskey. In 2010, the City of Petoskey undertook over $2 million dollars of improvements in the Bear River Valley Recreation Area including a .25-mile whitewater boating area in the Bear River. This improved whitewater course flows through an area that was once home to multiple dams and various industries - the Bear River has more fall than any river in the lower peninsula of Michigan. Today, you will find a river that has been beautifully restored, with walking paths and lookouts that will keep even experienced whitewater kayaks entertained and coming back for more.

The easy winding current of the Bear River allows paddlers and passengers a chance to see beaver, turtles, ducks, and other wildlife. Birdwatchers, bring your binoculars as the banks are inhabited with scores of wild birds including a Blue Heron who never fails to return every year. If it's fishing that interests you bring your poles. The Bear River houses Rainbow Trout and Brook Trout. The season opens in April and runs into September. To ensure your safety, a canoe is provided with coast guard approved cushions. Life jackets are provided for the little ones. So bring the entire family, get away from it all and enjoy some of the relaxing rustic beauty Northern Michigan is noted for.

Much of the ride is along the Lake Michigan Shoreline. If you follow the road to Cross Village, a stop at Legs Inn is a no brainer. (You'll see our Legs Inn recommendation in this Guidebook under Restaurants.) This is one of the most scenic roadways in Michigan, and it is particularly beautiful during Fall's color season. You can hop on M-119 by turning right on Country Club Road, then left Manvel Road, then left on US 31 North, then make a quick right at the light--you'll see the Michigan State Police Post on M-119.

Fishing

Whether you want to fly fish, hire a charter, toss a line from a dock or bring your own fishing boat and spend the day on the lake, the Petoskey Area is a fisherman’s dream. Each of the local lakes has an interesting collection of fish from bass, to perch, pike, and walleye. Petoskey’s Bear River plays host to brook trout, salmon and steelhead. And those who hit the colder waters of Little Traverse Bay will likely pull in trout, salmon, bass, and steelhead. Of course, there are also a bunch of lesser-known lakes and streams around where you can try your luck. Let us know if you're interested in a fly fishing lesson or guide, a boat rental, or want to hire a charter.

Two of the Midwest's best ski resorts are within a 12-minute drive.
A local fav, with a free ski run for children (and adults) located near the "Barney Lift" as we call it because of its purple color. Nubs has spectacular views of Little Travers Bay and plenty to keep skiers and boarders happy--check out their terrain park. Nub’s Nob is still the only Midwestern area ever to garner North American Gold Medals from SKI Magazine when it was voted #1 for terrain parks and #4 for grooming in 2007 and into the Top Ten of all the US and Canada ski resorts for snow, grooming, and value in 2002.

The design strikes a balance between the stunning natural beauty and what was once an abandoned shale quarry. The courses are typically played in pairs - each with a different finishing nine - to form three unique 18-hole course routings to test and reward every player and skill level. $$$
