After the completion of the Potamon Dam lake , the conditions for even greater attraction and presence of birds in the municipality of Amari area were created . The dam is in a great location, in a green valley and was constructed to meet the increasing water needs for irrigation of the wider area of Rethymnon .The dam was built in recent years in a position north of the village and of Patsos Gorge that had as a result the active transformation of the landscape since the small closed valley of Potamon now hosts a lake which is already working as an artificial wetland of great interest because it forms a new attraction area of recreational and tourism activities. Biologically speaking, it already seems to host a significant population of migratory birds , not to mention the important presence of endangered species such as the Ferruginous Duck. Its reservoir contains a significant amount of water.

Damnoni beach can be found near the village Spili of the Rethymno prefecture, 30 kilometers from the property. A white-sanded, 600 meters long Damnoni beach is located right outside a big valley, near a small river, surrounded by tall mountains. The west side of Damnoni beach provides its visitors with umbrellas, sunbeds, showers and a lifeguard. In the middle of Damnoni beach there is a traditional tavern densely surrounded by tamarisks. This region is recommended for its water sports since there is a diving school not far away, as well as a horse riding center. Also you can find few rooms to rent nearby. Heading west from the Damnoni beach, there are few small bays to be found, with sand and pebbles, where you can relax avoiding crowded places, like for example Ammoudi beach.

The impressive gorge of Agios Antonios—also known as Patsos Gorge—is in the midland of the regional unit of Rethymno, 2 Km away from the property, at green Amarios municipality. A beautiful green and easy going gorge where the temperature stays mild. You can walk this gorge without guidance and it has a special bonus, there’s a very good family restaurant called Drymos (with a small animal park) at the beginning. The gorge was named after Patsos, an adjacent village, which is located on the foothills of mound Soros, at an elevation of 490m, 30km from Rethymno city. This is a really beautiful gorge, traversed by a small river and utilized by the forest management agency. Its total length reaches 2km, it is quite easy to cross, taking 2 hours to cross it round-trip. The elevation difference between its highest point and the entrance is 240m. In the gorge there are points of rest, springs of running water by the river, as well as a birdwatching post. What is most impressive about the gorge is its huge plane trees, the dense vegetation growing in the riverbed, as well as its enormous walls. Within the rocks you can see the cavernous Saint Anthony's church, while there used to be a pagan temple on a rocky protrusion by the church. This temple used to be a point of Minoan worship of nature, which focused on the mystery of the change of seasons and the renewal cycle of vegetation. The sanctity of the temple had been respected and remained untouched from the Minoan ages until the early years of Roman conquer. What remains out of doubt, though, is that whoever follows its paths is seduced by its exquisite beauty and unwilling to leave it.

The main road from Mixorouma direction Plakias and Preveli leads through an impressive gorge where it usually is very windy. The Kourtaliotiko Gorge (Greek: Κουρταλιώτικο Φαράγγι), also known as the Asomatos Gorge (Greek: Φαράγγι Ασώματου), is a gorge on the southern side of the western part of the island of Crete. It is situated where the Kourtaliotiko River flows southwards between the mountains of Kouroupa and Xiron. The village of Koxare is at the northern end of the gorge. A road runs north to south through the gorge connecting Koxare to Asomatos; it then leads west, to the town of Plakias on the southern coast of Crete. There is a specific point on the gorge, about 20 metres from the northern entrance where "claps" can be heard, like hands coming together. These "claps" are the "kourtala", that give the name to the gorge. These are a consequence of the wind being funnelled through the high caves of the gorge and breaking the sound barrier. The point near the northern entrance is the main point where this sound can be heard. You can park in the middle and have a walk to find out and have your hat blown away. Rethymnon has a most spectacular natural attraction with its Kourtaliotiko Gorge. It starts just after the village of Koxare and flows between the mountains Kouroupis (984 m) and Xiro Oros (Dry Mountain - 904m). The huge cliffs of the canyon reach a height of 600 meters and are full of openings and caves, where significant fauna species live like the Lammergeier vulture. The canyon is crossed by the Kourtaliotis River which flows up to Lake Preveli, after merging with Frati Gorge. In its latest part it is called Big River. If you want to visit the Agios Nikolaos church deep down in the gorge, you can park at the south end and walk down in ten minutes. The springs of Kourtaliotis, near the chapel, are one of the nicest attractions of the gorge. It is a wonderful gorge for trekking along its riverbed, while playing with water. To walk this paradise like riverbed with waterfalls it’s best to go from the bottom of the gorge where the road turns west to Asomatos.

It is one of the Eastern Orthodox Monasteries underlining the catholicity and universality of the Church. Each year the Monastery receives and hosts many visitors and pilgrims from all over the world, from distant civilizations. Here are blended many languages, cultures, traditions, history and polymorphism. Nothing from the above can impede the faith unity, the catholicity of the orthodox spirit, the universality of the ecclesiastical testimony. The Arkadi Monastery has a unique natural beauty, a prestigious history, numerous legends deeply rooted in the time, heirlooms and thesaurus richness. Possibly because the old is livelier than the new, and the modern is often more mature than the aged. Each pilgrim and visitor feels something which is exclusively his, personal, original in his experiential and spiritual experience.
