Olynthus (Ancient Greek: Ὄλυνθος Olynthos, named for the ὄλυνθος olunthos, "the fruit of the wild fig tree"[1]) was an ancient city of Chalcidice, built mostly on two flat-topped hills 30–40m in height, in a fertile plain at the head of the Gulf of Torone, near the neck of the peninsula of Pallene, about 2.5 kilometers from the sea, and about 60 stadia (c. 9–10 kilometers) from Poteidaea.[2][3] Artefacts found during the excavations of the site are exhibited in the Archaeological Museum of Olynthos.

The bejewelled with stalagmites and stalactites Petralona Cave is formed about 300 m above sea level. The Cave was spotted in 1959 by the inhabitant of the Petralona village Philippos Chatzaridis from an ovoid (0,7 m long) diaklasis (fracture) of the limestone Kalavros Mountain (~ 700 m high), which is created in Jurassic era (~150 million years) by undersea sediments that emerged in various phases during next periods. Most probably during Mio-Pleiocene, about 5 million years ago, the Cave's main compartments were formed. Internationally it became known when the famous fossilized skull of Petralona man was found by another villager, Christos Sariannidis, along with five other men (three of whom scientists).

About 20 years later, some foreigners moved into Parthenonas – renovating the old stone houses, making taverns and restaurants, small guesthouses, hotels, and even a museum. This historical village can easily keep you entertained for a day or more, as you hike up the mount Itamos for a view of Mount Athos to the east and Mount Olympus to the west. Enjoy the surrounding hiking trails through the olive groves. Take a mountain bike and ride the trails which cross the mountains of Sithonia. Or just sit and have a lazy afternoon coffee or an ouzo at an outdoor restaurant, overlooking the Gulf of Toroneos with a view of the island Kelyfos. Parthenonas will definitely give you a refreshing change from the beach and is something very special in Sithonia.
