A great place any time of day. Views of the harbor or the waves of South Beach. Most days you can see Seals and Sea Lions and maybe an otter in the harbor. They server classics like Clam Chowder, fish and chips, burgers, crab melt, etc.

Crescent Beach is a long and wide beach immediately south of Crescent City. The main parking area, located near the midpoint of the crescent-shaped beach, can be found on Enderts Beach Road off Highway 101. This parking lot and the beach south of here is on Redwood National Park property. Winter storms toss driftwood and logs high up on the back of the beach creating many resting spots for a long walk along this shoreline. Just south of the parking lot is a wetland area where Mill Creek pools up before flowing across the sand. There is a beach overlook at the end of Enderts Beach Road that looks back over the entire length of Crescent Beach.

Pebble Beach is a long string of connected coves in Crescent City. The beach has numerous parking areas all along South and North Pebble Beach Drive between Battery Point and Point St. George. Starting at the south end, there is a fishing access and picnic area parking lot across from Brother Jonathan Memorial Park, and about 500 feet north of that is a road that drops down to parking on a rocky point called Preston Island. The widest part of the beach is after the housing development ends and a large wetlands area opens on the inland side of the road. Large drift logs dot the shoreline here and huge rocks are seen offshore.

Kellogg Beach is a small Del Norte County beach access surrounded by state lands north of Crescent City. The beach access has a parking area and a path for vehicles to drive right onto the sand. If you walk or drive north you’ll be in the northern portion of Tolowa Dunes State Park and if you walk south (no vehicles allowed south of Kellogg Road) you’ll be on the beach at Lake Earl State Wildlife Area. This is a remote spot on the Northern California coast making it great for beachcombing. Driftwood, agates, and fossils can be found in addition to cool stuff that washes ashore. If you plan to drive on the beach, it is highly recommended to have a 4WD vehicle.

Enderts Beach is a remote beach south of Crescent City. The beach is known mostly for its tide pools, but is worth the effort to get here just for the views. Turn off Highway 101 onto Enderts Beach Road and drive to the very end at Crescent Beach Overlook, a Redwood National Park facility. Hike (or bike) this trail for about 3/4 mile of flat wide trail to Nickel Creek Camp, then you descend a short path to the beach. You’ll find rocks and driftwood on the beach and a small canyon where Nickel Creek cuts through the hillside to reach the sand. It’s best to avoid high tide at Enderts Beach as it gets pretty narrow then.

Located at the southern end of the spectacular 11-mile long Samuel Boardman Scenic Corridor, Lone Ranch Beach is comprised of sandy beach, rocks, and close-in offshore sea stacks. At low tide, easily accessible tide pools form amid the rocks, providing the perfect opportunity for children (and grown-ups!) to safely explore these fascinating, miniature marine habitats. The area is also a prime location for whale-watching and bird-watching. A rich variety of raptors, water fowl and perching birds make their home there. 4 miles north of Brookings. Turn off Hwy 101 at the 352.6 milepost

Located in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, it takes a bit of work to get to the North Coast gem known as Fern Canyon, but it’s worth it. From Highway 101 at Orick, drive unpaved Davison Road 10 miles to this spectacular canyon, a hidden paradise of ferns lining a narrow gorge carved out by Home Creek. Some of the seven different types of ferns clinging to the steep cliffs are ancient species, with ancestry tracing back 325 million years. Living underneath their leafy shade are some eye-catching amphibians, including Pacific giant salamanders, which can measure nearly a foot in length, and northern red-legged frogs. The trail follows a series of small footbridges (installed in summer) deep into the canyon. Lush, drooping ferns create hanging gardens, miniature waterfalls pour down rock faces, and moss wallpapers every surface. The walls grow taller and squeeze tighter as you travel. Are you experiencing déjà vu? Steven Spielberg filmed a Jurassic Park II scene within this canyon. Every curve and turn leads to another Instagram-it-now (if there were reception) view. Far too soon, the trail curves left and ascends out of the canyon, then loops back to the parking lot. More than a few Fern Canyon hikers opt to retrace their steps instead of continuing on the loop—it’s just too hard to leave this special place. Insider tips: It’s wet here. River sandals or waterproof boots come in handy. The fee to enter the park is $8 per car, and it’s best to have it in cash, because it’s not always possible to use a credit card.

Lake Earl is the largest coastal lagoon on the US West Coast. Further inland the area ends in upland fields and forest of Sitka spruce and pine trees. Some of the diverse wildlife species that can be found in this area include quail, grouse, canvasback, western grebe, coastal black-tailed deer, and beaver. Location: 5 miles north of Crescent City, bordering the Pacific Ocean Access: From Highway 101 take Lake Earl Drive. Go left at Old Mill Road. The Chart Room sits on the jetty adjacent to the harbor, on one side you have South Beach, the other you have the harbor view and Battery Point. On most days, seal and sea lions will be sitting out the window sunning themselves, maybe an otter will swim by. You can watch the fishing boats unload or watch the surfers ride waves at South Beach. The food is good home cooking, fish and chips are great. They have breakfast, lunch and dinner. They also have a small bar area.
