This little coffee shop (which also sells beer and wine) is right on a pond with amazing views of the Great Divide. They also have live music outside during the warm summer months, so you can relax with a beer or glass of wine, listen to an acoustic set, and watch a stunning sunset over the mountains. Doesn’t really get much better.

Serious cinnamon rolls! They close when they sell out, so consider ordering the day before for pick up in the morning. If you are staying in the cottage or the house downtown, you can enjoy a morning walk, and head out on foot — the bakery is less than a mile west of downtown, just off the bike path.

The Donut Haus has moved to the Sinclair gas station about a mile west (toward the National Park) of the old location, but don’t worry, the same folks and same recipes are still creating the classic donut magic. These donuts are an iconic part of any trip to Estes Park and the line in the summer can be long. They will close when they sell out, so get there early for the best selection. Our faves are the cheesecake cinnamon roll (a sharing size donut for sure) and the pinecones.

This little gem only has 4 tables, but that's okay, because their awesome breakfast burritos are great to grab on your way into the National Park for a morning hike. If you are feeling indulgent, make sure you add sausage gravy to your burrito. Sandwiches are pricey, but huge! And, hands-down, the best Rueben I've ever eaten.

Okay, I know that most big cities probably have much more authentic Thai cuisine, but we still love Cafe de Pho Thai. Also, in the summer, when wait times to be seated in local restaurants can be very long, our favorite solution is to call in an order for pick-up, and bring home Thai food to eat on the deck.

Back in the 60s this was a roadhouse, and the college students would come up from Boulder to dance to the bands. Now, it is an excellent restaurant with regular live music. The staff are great, the atmosphere is pure mountain rustic, and the music is fun. They don’t take reservations, so plan to get there early for happy hour or just get there early enough that a long wait time doesn’t get you too hangry. (This is a favorite hang out for RMNP employees and wildland fire crews — if you sit at the bar long enough you might be able to get some inside tips and good stories.)

With so many candy & ice-cream places to choose from, I’ll help narrow it down. Laura’s is the place. I even ship boxes of their toffee & fudge to our relatives for Christmas every year — along with a pound of Kind Coffee. If your grandparents came to Estes Park on vacation, they probably got taffy at this taffy shop. This is the original taffy shop in Estes Park. The first owners sold it to a local family a few years ago, and they are always in there working as a team to maintain the same quality and historic authenticity. I prefer the coffee at Kind … but the pastries, breads, quiche, and pizzas are all baked in-house, something you will not find at any other coffee shop in town. They are set up as a grab-n-go, but just go right onto the patio and enjoy that view. They have a speck & fontina croissant that is to die for, IMHO. Sometimes I get 2, and take one home for an afternoon snack.

Weekend mornings there is always a long wait to be seated at this little breakfast and lunch place. Don't let that scare you off, there is a reason the locals are willing to wait 10-30 minutes on a Saturday morning.

Parks & Nature

Want a different view of Estes Park? A hike with less people? Want to take your mountain bikes out for a ride? Hermit Park, a county park, has miles of mountain bike trails as well as the Krueger Rock Hike*. The trail ends at a 180 degree view of the Estes Valley — but if you scramble to the top of Krueger Rock, you will be treated to a 360 degree view of the whole area. 1000ft elevation gain in 2 miles, it’s a moderate hike with several scenic views on the way up — so if you don’t want to go all the way, you can still get an amazing family photo. The park closes December - February depending on snow accumulation. *Fall of 2021 a fire started in the neighborhood on the west side of Krueger Rock, fueled by high winds it raced up the ridge while firefighters fought to keep the homes safe. You will hike through the burn scar in the last 1/4 mile before the summit.

The 3 mile walk around Lake Estes takes you through a bird sanctuary, past the marina, and through a meadow. There are places to sit and enjoy the views along the way, some good uphill sections, but mainly flat terrain and all on a paved sidewalk. You can rent paddle boats, pontoons, and four seater bikes at the Lake Estes Marina as well.

The highest paved road in the USA. Get up above tree line and you can see forever. Sunrise and sunset, stargazing and wildlife watching — it is one of the most scenic drives imaginable. At the top, you will find the Alpine Visitor Center, and you can take a short hike out to the overlook — and short is perfect since you will be over 12,000 feet above sea level. This road closes at Many Park Curve or Rainbow Curve during the winter months, approximately late October - late May depending on snowfall. They can get 20+ feet of snow at the top!

This is a sprawling National Forest with many different access points. Mount Olympus is a tough hike, but the views are stunning at the top. North Fork hike will take you to the burn scar from the Cameron Peak Fire. Pole Hill access has roads for 4 wheeling and mountain biking. I love walking/hiking these roads in the off-season when the off road vehicles aren’t as numerous. Lyons Gulch hike goes back to some cool old homesteads (also accessible via Hermit Park Moose Meadows trailhead).

Essentials

Small town means fewer options when it comes to getting your essentials. While there are a couple other markets and convenience stores-- The Country Market is one -- they don't have the choices that Safeway offers. Just be prepared to be patient as you brave the crowds and the lines. Don’t worry though, the view as you walk out the front doors will make your day! Pro Tip: if it is windy, and it can get REALLY windy, park facing the mountains or into the wind so you don’t lose a car door to a gust.
