Food Scene

Beach Bar. Great food. My favorite is the Bombay pizza, prawns avocado cocktail, Yuls burger, and for dessert the banana and ice cream crepes! The ice creams are all homemade my favorite is the strawberry, everything else on the menu is good too. For non alcoholic drinks try the Multi-vitamin, orange or the lemonade which you could add a dash of tequila :-) On Saturdays they have a Dj after 10pm.

The Tamarind has a dine in restaurant and an dhow dinner cruise which is a little pricey but worth every penny. I recommend the dhow dinner cruise..... In the early seventies there were no quality restaurants in Mombasa, and Kenyan born Chris Seex, who was managing a coastal resort hotel at the time, was determined to correct this. One of his ambitions was to create the finest seafood restaurant in Africa. With little financial and moral support he designed and built the Mombasa Tamarind, a dream, which he fulfilled with passion. Built in Arab style with high arches and a crenellated roof , the elegant, gleaming white building has the perfect setting – a starlit terrace perched on a cliff overlooking the picturesque Old Harbour of Mombasa. The menu is a blend of the best of French, Asian and African cuisines. The Tamarind's specialty is seafood and only the freshest ingredients are used. The Prawns Piri Piri, Chilli Crab and Lobster have earned the Tamarind restaurant worldwide fame and rave reviews from publications such as Gourmet, the London Times and the Herald Tribune. Personal service, original presentation and attention to detail has developed Tamarind’s reputation as one of the finest restaurants in Africa, and achieved the ambition of the founder. The restaurant's seating capacity is 160 people and currently has a staff of 120. OPEN FOR LUNCH AND DINNER SEVEN DAYS A WEEK CONTACTS: TAMARIND MOMBASA Cement Silo Road, Nyali PO Box 85785, Mombasa, 80100 Tel: O41 4471 747 or 4474600 Mob: 0733623583 / 0722205160 Fax: O414474630 e.mail: reservations.mombasa@tamarind.co.ke

"Home of the Dolphin" Unspoiled, beautiful and sun kissed, the Kisite Marine Park was established to protect the scenic islands and special habitats of a wide range of endemic marine animals and breeding migratory birds. It lies in the coral gardens south of Wasini Island and encompasses three small coral rag forest islands, each with considerable areas of fringing reef. Kisite is one of the most rewarding snorkelling locations at the coast. Visitors can also enjoy bird watching, diving and of course, sunbathing. Sightseeing

Our recommended taxi Driver David 0722-568-258 can take you to Old Town Mombasa or if you find yourself in downtown Mombasa A 10-minute ride in a tuk-tuk from downtown Mombasa Town, past whistling coconut trees, will see you at the entrance of Mombasa Old Town. The ancient town will then, as in a time travel tale, stretch out its arms and enfold you into its rich history, taking you years back. Yet it is not Mombasa Old Town’s history that will take your breath away at first but its 18th century architecture — carved and curved beautiful old buildings, elegant balconies and coral walls whose designs were influenced by Portuguese and Islamic Arab traders. A stroll in the narrow streets is a pleasant enough experience though it is highly unlikely you will explore the whole 180 acres which make up Mombasa Old Town. A rich cultural melting point, Mombasa Old Town is home to a mixture of communities, among them Arabs, Asians, Swahilis and you might even bump into the occasional Portuguese who decided to stay behind after completing construction of Fort Jesus. Historically, the town’s architecture was influenced by Mombasa’s trade culture. The trade came about as a result of the town housing a port. The old port, it is said, still brings in spices from Zanzibar. The people of Mombasa Old Town are as delightful and as mysterious as the town itself. The women and girls, resplendent in buibuis and kangas, and the men in long white kanzus, will more often than not send a warm smile in your direction. And if you happen to have a minute, nay, an hour to spare, the good natured people, famed for their rich oral history, might tell you winding tales of invisible Djinnis (spirits) that live in the ancient walls of the town. I recommend you as David the Taxi Driver to recommend a tour guide.

Arts & Culture

The Portuguese built Fort Jesus in 1593. The site chosen was a coral ridge at the entrance to the harbor. The Fort was designed by an Italian Architect and Engineer, Joao, Batista Cairato. The earliest known plan of the Fort is in a manuscript Atlas by Manuel Godinho de Heredia - dated 1610 which shows the original layout of the buildings inside the Fort. Fort Jesus was built to secure the safety of Portuguese living on the East Coast of Africa. It has had a long history of hostilities of the interested parties that used to live in Mombasa. Perhaps no Fort in Africa has experienced such turbulence as Fort Jesus. Omani Arabs attacked the Fort from 1696 to 1698.
