Food Scene

Great local Dominican fare with friendly service and great variety. On really hot days they have an indoor air conditioned room that seems to always be available. Great fish and chicken dishes, curry dishes and pizza. They also deliver to the Villa.

Decent Italian food near Sosua beach. Our favorites: the Cheese Ravioli and the pizza!

Some people love the food here. Frankly, it is not our favorite hangout for food but great, hospitality, drinks and entertainment. Morua Mai across the street has much better food in our view.

Great Indian and Asian food. Always consistently good. Try the Gamberoni curry madras, it is awesome. For 1400 pesos (US$27), you get to choose from a vast selection of fantastic items for 2 persons that frankly my wife and I could not finish. Best naan bread I have ever tasted and I live near New York City.

Drinks & Nightlife

Primarily a singles hangout. Has changed owners and maybe its name a few times but ask anyone on the strip and they will direct you there.

One of the best water sport beaches in the world. Take kite surfing lessons and hit the waters (at your own risk) in no time! Or come at night and enjoy the quiet romantic ambiance, great food and interesting people.

The sandy area is very large. The water is clear and warm and has nice waves. It is also less frequented than Sosua beach. There are not as many sellers and thus more private. The beach is located at the end of Dr. Rosen street, right next to the Waterfront Restaurant, in front of the Jewish Memorial Park. It is easily accessible by a few stairs leading down from the park, the restaurant, as well as the adjacent Casa Marina Beach Resort. Casa Marina has its own beach further down, but Playa Alicia has become the more popular beach

The largest beach in Sosua. Beach chairs & umbrellas are available for rent. Try the banana boats at your own risk! You get tugged and swung by a boat until you fall off. Life jackets available. Sosua Beach is also a go-to spot for snorkeling. The reef is a close swim and the water is usually crystal clear. You can rent what you need to take the plunge right on the beach for a few hundred pesos. Lots of vendors selling things but they get the idea to back off if you are firm (be nice as this is how they make a living). For a slower pace try the glass bottom boats or a fishing excursion. Don't like vendors: go to nearby Playa Alicia.

Arts & Culture

The Jewish Museum of Sosua is within walking distance from the villa. This museum is a tribute to the 700 refugee Jews who were received by the then President, Trujillo, in 1938, during the Nazi occupation of Germany. The exhibitions show photographs and objects of interest belonging to the immigrants and the dairy produce manufacture facilities that they created in the town.

While both Sosua and nearby Cabarete (10 minute drive) have a number of small shops selling art, souvenirs, clothing, jewelry and more, the nearest shopping malls can be found in Puerto Plata which is the 3rd largest city in the DR. One such mall, Playa Dorada, is small but sells a variety of souvenirs, swimsuits, sandals and more. Comparison-shop before you purchase, though, because many stores sell the same or similar items. La Sirena and other super stores and electronics and furniture stores can be found on or just off the main highway leading into Puerto Plata from Sosua. Puerto Plata also has a fair number of clubs, bars and restaurants that offer food and drinks.

Essentials

Walking distance from the villa. A supermarket with everything you need and a great mix of local and famous brands. They accept US and Dominican cash and major credit cards. Try to use cash to avoid foreign transaction fees charged by your credit card company and get the best exchange rate. Also, local meats, juice, condiments etc cost a lot less and typically are fresh.

Entertainment & Activities

Iguana Mama has a greater selection of activities but Mel Tours is right in Sosua. Great tour guides that can take you on horseback riding and ATV excursions and everything else in between. You can save money by going directly to the vendors running these activities but folks like Mel Tours can make it easy for you and provide transport.
