So many great shops downtown! I recommend O'Suzannah (unique and artfully organized gifts for all ages) and Market Street Market (yummy sandwiches and basics for a gourmet picnic)

Food Scene
Amazing craft cocktails and food. I recommend the veggie board, an artful and healthy alternative to charcuterie! You do need a reservation, though sometimes you can luck out and get a bar seat.

Sightseeing
Even if you're not into going to Monticello proper and doing the tour, you can thoroughly enjoy the surrounding trails, which are free and wonderful for families. There are wider, fine gravel trails, as well as steeper single track trails for hiking and biking. There's also a great old tree long for the little ones to play on.
