Odessa National Academic Opera and Ballet Theater

Odessa National Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet Building (second) was constructed in Vienna Baroque style and opened in 1887. unique acoustics of the horseshoe-designed hall. recent renovation of the theater was completed in 2007. theater is interesting not only for its architecture, but also for its rich creative biography and has a great merit in the development of musical culture in Ukraine. It was conducted by PI Tchaikovsky, NA Rimsky-Korsakov, SV Rakhmaninov, sang Fyodor Shalyapin, Salome Krushelnytska, Leonid Sobinov, Giuseppe Anselmi, Titta Ruffo. danced Anna Pavlova, Isadora Duncan, Ekaterina Geltser. After his first visit to the theater, Fyodor Shalyapin wrote to his wife: “... I was in the theater and came to a wild delight from the beauty of the theater. I've never seen anything more beautiful in my life. ” good repertoire, as well as opera and ballet troupes nowadays.

Since 1924 the building has housed the Odessa Philharmonic. The design resembles the Doge's Palace in Venice. The building was intended as the new stock exchange, or "New Exchange" to replace the old stock exchange, and the vast hall was decorated with six panels by the artist Nikolai Karazin which depict commerce throughout various stages of history. The large hall has no supporting columns, and because of this, it was one of the most expensive buildings in Odessa to build. The main entrance is by a large open-sided, roofed gallery. The ceiling of this open entry is painted with the twelve symbols of the Zodiac.

The inside and exterior of the Passage building are decorated by numerous sculptures and there’s glass roof inside. On the ground floor there are many boutiques multiple shops, restaurants.
