Please remember that the Alamo was never completed and what you are visiting is the ruins of what was to be a mission had it not been destroyed by Santa Ana's army during the battle of the Alamo. These ruins are considered a shrine because of the men who willingly fought and died for independence on its hallowed grounds. The Battle of the Alamo is considered key to westward expansion of the US

Our beautiful and historic missions run along the newest, southern-extension of the San Antonio River Walk known as the Mission Reach and combined are designated a National Historical Park which was recently designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. (A very big deal indeed.)
